The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued an executive order that will allow owners of exotic reptiles (Reptiles of Concern) who do not have permits to turn their pets over to a permit holder with no questions asked. The amnesty program will run indefinitely. We have a Reptiles of Concern license from the FWC for all reptiles of concern, so if you need to surrender a burmese python, reticulated python, nile monitor, or other ROC, we can legally take it in and find it a licensed adopter--you are now legally able to do so without any legal issues (up until this week that would have been illegal, and would have had criminal consequences). Until then, we will make sure it is well taken care of and lives a happy, healthy life.
We rescue reptiles from folks in Florida who are either unable to take care of their own reptiles any longer, or who have found abandoned reptiles---they keep us busy! It's costly, but we can't let an animal suffer from neglect or lack of proper care. We would rather take them in and care for them than the alternative, folks letting them go in the wild or putting them to sleep.
We are licensed by the state of Florida FWC as an adopter of snakes and reptiles as well as being a Reptiles of Concern license holder. We are also incorporated by the state of Florida as a non-profit organization. We currently work with Orange County Animal Services, the SPCA of Central Florida, as well as individuals who wish to turn their reptiles over to us.
As well as being a member of the wonderful PetFinder organization, we are proud members of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles, the National Pet Association, the United States Association of Reptile Keepers and the Rescue Network.
All reptiles will only be adopted out to people who know how to properly care for them, so you will be asked about animal husbandry for the specific reptile you are adopting. You will start by filling out our Adoption Application.
We do not sell reptiles, however we do ask for an appropriate adoption fee to cover our feeding, housing and veterinarian fees. These fees are based on a variety of factors including retail value. Adoption fees serve to protect reptiles from individuals who would wrongfully adopt them for commercial purposes. 100% of adoption fees go toward operating expenses at Reptile Clan Rescue. We aim to keep any fees significantly lower than "market prices" to make reptile adoptions more affordable to good homes. We will not provide adoptions for the purpose of resale or breeding.
As part of the adoption agreement, you agree that if the reptile does not work out for you, you agree to give the reptile back to the rescue so he or she can be placed with someone else.
Reptile Clan Rescue is a private nonprofit organization with limited space and resources. We will not allow our rescue to become overcrowded to the point that animals become neglected, and must turn away reptiles in some cases. Even if we can't take in your reptile here at the rescue, we'll still help you find a home for it while it remains in your care.
