Adopting A Friend The Seminole County Animal Services Division is proud to offer animals for adoption six days a week. The division takes in sixty to eighty animals each day and many of those animals are put up for adoption. Although adopting pets from Animal Services is fairly simple, there are a few things that we require from new adopters before we can place a pet in a new home.

Seminole County Animal Services Requirements for Adoption:
  • You must be 18 years or older to adopt.
  • The shelter only takes cash or checks, NO Debit or Credit cards.
  • You must show a valid driver's license or an official government issued form of identification.
  • If you live in Seminole County it is a county requirement that your pets have a current county license. This license can be purchased at the shelter with proof of a current rabies vaccine being presented for your pet. They are $6 for a sterilized animal and $11 for an intact dog or cat. These tags are required by law annually for every dog, cat and ferret residing in Seminole County. Please think about updating you current pets' licenses, if they are due, when you visit Animal Services.
  • If you lease, rent, or lease to own your home, we ask that you speak with the property owner to verify that you can have a dog or a cat in your home. Please verify that the breed and size of dog is OK with them and check if a Pet Deposit is required before bringing home a new pet.
  • If you live with your parents or your roommate owns the home discuss bringing a new pet into their home. We want everyone living in the home to be comfortable with the idea of having a new pet.
  • If you have other dogs, cats, or ferrets please be sure they are current on their rabies vaccination and other annual vaccines. Since you will be bringing a new pet into your home you want to be sure all pets are protected through vaccines from anything that can be transmitted from one pet to another. This includes fleas and parasites. Living in Florida we encourage all pets be on some sort of flea prevention and all dogs be kept on heartworm prevention monthly for the life of the dog.
  • If the dog or cat that you adopt is NOT already spayed or neutered you will not be able to take the animal home with you the same day. Once you adopt the cat or dog a spay or neuter date will be set up. Once the animal is spayed or neutered you will pick your new pet up from Lake Mary Veterinary Clinic, this is the clinic that will be performing the pets surgery. (This surgery can usually be scheduled within 1-3 days of adoption.)
  • LOCATION. We are Seminole County Animal Services 232 Bush Blvd. Sanford. We are located ACROSS the street from Flea World. We are BEHIND the courthouse on Bush Blvd. The SPCA is next door to Flea World and sometimes our 2 facilities are mistaken for each other.
  • If you emailed or are inquiring about a specific dog be have the dogs ID number and name handy. The ID number starts with an "a".
  • We provide these guidelines for adoption so that when you are ready to adopt you come prepared and are ready to welcome a new pet into your home.
  • What should you consider before adopting?
Do you have the resources to fund the cost of pet maintenance & medical care?
Do you have adequate time to devote to a pet?
Does anyone in your household suffer from allergies?
Do you have sufficient space for a pet?
Do you have landlord or condo restrictions regarding not only pet ownership, but also the size and breed of pets?
Does your homeowner's insurance exclude coverage for certain breeds?
Do you already have pets that will have to adjust to a new pet?
Small dogs and small children usually do not mix well. Puppies and kittens usually do not thrive when mixed with small children.
Pets should never be given as gifts, particularly holiday gifts.
Are you planning to move? Consider how a pet will affect your plans.
  • Adoption Hours are 10:00am -4:00pm Monday through Saturday. We are closed Sunday and Holidays.
  • Adopting our animals out to new wonderful homes is very important to us. So if you have any questions or need us to clarify anything about the adoption process please feel free to contact Diane at 407-665-5208.
Our adoption shelter is equipped to hold approximately 100 dogs and 50 cats and these cages are nearly always full. These animals come to Seminole County Animal Services in one of two ways: their owner has surrendered them, or they are picked up as stray animals and never reclaimed. Therefore, background information is limited or nonexistent. In addition to dogs and cats, Animal Services sometimes takes in small animals such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc., and these animals are often available for adoption as well.

Florida law requires that any dog or cat adopted from a public shelter in Florida be spayed or neutered.

Adoption fees are as follows:

Type of Animal Adoption Fee Sterilization Certificate Microchip Total
CATS - Sterilized $5.00 N/A $5.00 $10.00

*Seminole County residents are required to purchase a $6.00 Seminole County Pet License at the time of adoption in addition to the above adoption fees*

Before being made available for adoption, cats are tested for the feline leukemia virus and dogs (over 6 months of age) are tested for heartworms. The animals are each given their first series of vaccines and a dose of general dewormer for internal parasites. Animals that are over four months of age will also receive a rabies vaccination. Since Animal Services does not have a veterinarian on staff full time, we cannot guarantee the health status of any animal adopted from our shelter. An animal may have problems that our staff has not detected. These include, but are not limited to, mange, internal parasites, fleas, ticks, parvo, etc. We strongly suggest that all adopted animals visit a veterinarian within three days of adoption for a thorough physical examination.

Dogs and puppies are very susceptible to kennel cough, an airborne upper respiratory infection similar to a cold in people. Unfortunately, most of our dogs and puppies have been exposed and have possibly contracted kennel cough and may need veterinary attention. The symptoms of this infection are sneezing, runny eyes, and coughing.

Cats and kittens are very susceptible to airbome viruses that cause upper respiratory infections. These infections are virtually impossible to control in a public shelter. Therefore, most of our cats and kittens have been exposed and have possibly contracted an upper respiratory, which may need veterinary attention. The symptoms of these infections include sneezing and runny eyes.

The Seminole County Animal Services Division understands that sometimes certain animals don't work out in certain households. For this reason, any animal adopted from Seminole County Animal Services may be returned at any time WITHIN THE FIRST 30 DAYS AFTER ADOPTION for a partial refund. Please keep in mind that the refund check will be issued through the Seminole County Finance Department and then mailed to the adopter. No cash refunds or credit will be issued from the Animal Services Division office.
