Tails
of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue is a nonprofit (501c3) volunteer
organization, formed to help Siberian Huskies and Siberian Husky
Mixes that have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or surrendered
by their owners. Our goals are to place these dogs in loving homes
and to educate people about the characteristics of this wonderful,
yet often misunderstood, breed. To accomplish these goals and our
overall mission, our network of volunteers throughout PA, MD, NJ,
and DE are involved in raising funds, transporting and fostering
dogs, developing and maintaining our web site, and representing
the group at events.

Siberian
Huskies are beautiful, affectionate, active, and intelligent. Yet,
they are often misunderstood by people who are not prepared for
the very traits they were attracted to in the first place. Many
Huskies are commonly found in local animal shelters; there are many
reasons why these affectionate dogs end up there. Many are escape
artists who are picked up on the streets and are never reunited
with their owners. Many owners are not prepared for the energy these
dogs have and the exercise they require. Typical huskies are highly
intelligent, easily bored, and apt to get into trouble if they don't
receive proper obedience training and sufficient exercise. Just
like any other breed, huskies are not for every household. Although
they can be stubborn and mischievous, they are loyal and loving
dogs who enjoy family members of all ages.

- Read
about the breed
If you haven't before experienced the pleasure--and the challenge--of
living with a husky, we recommend you visit our breed
information page.
- Submit
an application
If, after reading about these lively dogs and their antics, you
feel you are up for the challenge and you live in our servicing
area (eastern PA, NJ, DE, or northeastern MD), fill out an adoption
application.
- The
application process
After you submit your adoption application, a member of our application
committee will call you to confirm we have received your application
and to help determine which type of dog might be the best fit
for your family. This person will also check your personal and--if
appropriate--vet references, which takes between one and six days
depending on the availability of the references.
- The
adoption appointment
When your application is approved, a TOTTSHR volunteer calls you
to schedule an appointment for your adoption and home check. We
will come to your home with two or three dogs that we feel, based
on our discussions with you, would fit well in your family. If
we all feel a particular dog is a good match, you can adopt the
dog at that time. We hope that your home is the very last stop
on the dog's journey and we do all we can to help you and your
dog make the transition easier, including providing you with an
information packet loaded with tips and phone numbers. We also
call you periodically to see how things are going and to help
you work through any issues that may have arisen after the adoption.
- Adoption
Cost and Vet Care
If you adopt
one of the dogs in the care of a a TOTTSHR foster home, the adoption
fee varies depending on the age of the dog and the number of dogs
adopted. The adoption fee is used primarily to cover medical expenses
such as spays/neuters, vet examinations, blood tests, vaccinations,
fecal tests and deworming, heartworm tests, and heartworm, tick,
and flea preventive. In addition to this medical care, you also
benefit from our experience with the breed and our continued support
with transitioning the dog into your home and helping you with
issues that may arise after the adoption. Our goal is to make
good, permanent placements; to this end, our foster homes provide
other intangibles like crate training, leash training, obedience
training, house training, socialization and temperament evaluation,
application checking, and home checks.
