The animals you see on our website need homes. But they need friends, too. Even if you can't adopt them, you can help care for them and find them homes. We spend an average of $60 on each animal from the time they walk through the door with an officer to the time they walk out with a new family. That's just for the direct costs of their care: food, medicine, vaccinations, treats, toys, kennel supplies, grooming and adoptions advertising. It doesn't include staff time, overhead, general operating expenses, or anything else. They would love your help as they make the transition from "unwanted" to "cherished." Please help with a sponsorship gift of $60 or any amount. A gift of any size will help give current and future animals the care -- and the hope -- that they need. They ask for so little and they deserve so much. Donate With A Credit Card If you would prefer to send a check, please make it payable to The Washington Humane Society, and send it to: The Washington Humane Society Attn: Development Office 7319 Georgia Ave., NW Washington, DC 20012 The Washington Humane Society is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. | The first step in adopting an animal is making a trip to one or both of our shelters. Check out the animals on the website, but remember new animals arrive everday. It pays to go down and see all the animals yourself. Please bring ID with your current address. By policy, WHS adopts to the local DC area only including MD and VA. |
| Steps Towards Adoption: |
|
1. When visiting the animals at the shelter, volunteers or staff can answer questions about animals, take animals out of their cages or runs and explain how the adoption works.
2. When you find an animal you want to adopt, you will be asked to fill out an application form, which will be briefly reviewed by a staff member. 3. Shelter staff may call you to discuss your application and the animal which you wish to adopt. They will call your landlord if you rent your home, to make sure that you are allowed to have pets. 4. If your application is approved, a volunteer will visit your home and talk to you about bringing a new animal home. 5. The animal will go to WHS's low-cost spay neuter clinic to be spayed or neutered.
