The 2008 Low Cost Rabies Clinic is scheduled for Saturday, May 31 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Company One, 1175 Ellington Road. Dogs MUST be leashed and cats MUST be in carriers. Written proof of prior vaccination is required for a three year vaccination. Without written proof the vaccination is good for one year only.
The laws of the State of Connecticut require that each dog aged six months or older be licensed by June thirtieth of each year. To obtain a license for your dog, bring proof of the current rabies vaccination and the dog's spay/ neuter certificate to the Town Clerk's office at Town Hall. If you have any questions, please call Animal Control at 648-6239 or the Town Clerk at 644-2511, extension 225.
Bark Park is open and provides a safe place for your dog to play and socialize with other dogs off leash. For more information go to the South Windor website. South Windsor Police Services reminds pet owners that dogs MUST be leashed on all other town owned property which includes all parks, playing fields, school grounds and right of ways. A pet owner is required to clean up after their animal whenever it is off of the owner's property. Recently we have received increased complaints of irresponsible owners in parks. This is a safety hazard for all concerned. Town open space properties such as the Michael Donnelly Land Preserve also support a substantial wildlife population that includes coyote and deer. A dog that is off leash can not be protected from coming into contact with these animals and risks exposure to injury and disease. Dirty parks are unpleasant for everyone. Violation of this ordinance will result in the issuance of an infraction ticket totaling $75.00 (seventy-five dollars). Pets that have contact with wildlife may be subject to a quarantine period of up to six months!
Pets should not be left outside unattended! Coyotes are indegenous to this area. To discourage all wildlife from your property leave no food sources including pet foods and bird seed outside. Secure your garbage and use motion detectors to turn on outside lights. Coyotes are active at all hours of the day and sightings do not need to be reported unless the coyote is behaving in an aggressive manner, or if it appears that it is sick or injured.
The Community Service Officers of the South Windsor Police Department handle all animal problems and complaints. We are assigned additional duties as well. Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns.
Adopting a friend
The Animal Population Control Program ( APCP) was created by Connecticut state law in 1992 and implemented on May 22, 1995. The program provides low cost vaccination and sterilization benefits for any unsterilized dog or cat adopted from a Connecticut municipal impound facility. Once a shelter pet has been selected, a $45 state adoption fee and a $5 municipal fee is collected. An eligible owner will be issued a vaccination/ sterilization voucher, which must be taken with the pet to a participating veterinarian for a health evaluation and to schedule the sterilization procedure. ALL pets MUST be altered within 60 days of the adoption date in order to receive the benefits. Additional information is available from your local Animal Control Officer.
