News

We are always looking for volunteers to help us with feedings, transport, fundraising, graphics and bookkeeping! We operate entirely on donations of time and funds. Want to learn about the world of feral cats and Trap/Neuter/Return? Looking for a charity to work with to make a difference? Know someone who needs to complete community service and loves to work with animals? Want to teach children the value and importance of animals in our lives? Please contact us! We appreciate your help and input, whether you are an individual, school or professional organization.

Who We Are

The Feral Cat Coaltion of Southwest Connecticut is a nonprofit group of volunteers in lower Fairfield County, Connecticut, who work tirelessly to reduce the population of feral cats by way of Trap/Neuter/Return. Our goal is to carry on the good work other groups before us have done and provide good living conditions for our wild, hard-working felines. If it weren't for feral cats, our rat population would be out of control!

We are NOT a shelter, but a group of volunteers who trap, neuter and return ferals, and feed colonies that are obviously scrounging for food in dumpsters. We do not take in surrendered pets because our space is very limited. If you absolutely must give up your pet, after you've exhausted other possibilities to keep him or her or find a home through relatives and friends, please contact your local animal shelter or place him/her on Petfinder to find your furry companion a new, loving home.

Adopting a friend

Feral cats are no different than their tame counterparts except they have had little or no human contact, and they live off the land or are fed in colonies by caregivers. Though feral cats would not make good pets, their young offspring very well could be your next lap cat! We humanely capture kittens and provide the best care in our foster homes. We also occasionally foster friendly strays who feed at our sites and who show promise of being a good house pet.

We hold firm on our adoption policies. We must adhere to everyone filling out an adoption form and upon approval, an adoption contract that will be enforced, along with a modest fee to cover the cost of altering and shots. If a cat is due for updated shots, FCCSWCT will pay for them at our own veterinarian. We FeLV/FIV test cats that show cause for concern and will retest at the adopter's expense. When adopting a small kitten (8 to 16 weeks old), we strongly recommend adopting either a sibling or playmate the kitten is used to if going into a home where there are no other pets or if the kitten will be alone more than 4 hours per day. Kittens are babies, and they need special nurturing when they are very young; if you are not in a position to adopt more than one kitten at this time, please consider an older (teenage) kitten or young adult.

And don't discount the reward you get from adopting an older cat! A 7-year-old cat is just as feisty and fun as a 6-month-old, but you have the benefit of having drapes with no holes in them! We have a Senior to Senior program, where we match up older cats with older individuals who want a calm companion in their home. It has been documented that cats enrich people's lives, so why not enrich theirs in return? Consider fostering an elderly cat whose owners have been sent to a nursing home or have died. Nothing is more heartbreaking than looking into the eyes of a terrified cat who has been left alone in a house without his "person." Please, please consider making this act of charity.

Adoption donation: $100

This price INCLUDES the cost of spay/neuter and vaccinations through the TEAM spay/neuter van. All of our cats will either be altered already at the time of adoption or will have an appointment for spay/neuter if they are too young at the time of adoption. If an adopter wishes to have their new kitten altered at their own veterinarian, FCCSWCT will refund a portion of the adoption fee that would have gone to TEAM upon receipt of a copy of the spay/neuter invoice or spay/neuter certificate from their vet.
