WHAT IS BLACK DOG SYNDROME??

This is a sad but true phenomanon, where dogs are not adopted based on the color of their fur. It is well known in the rescue world, that black dogs are the first to be eauthanized in the kill shelters, and the last to be adopted in rescue. These dogs more often than now, will make just as good family members as a dog of any other color, but they get overlooked because they are black or black and tan. So, please when you are looking at our list of available dogs...please choose your new family member based on who is the best fit for you and your family...rather than on color and looks alone. These dogs deserve a forever home just as much as dogs of any other color.

MEET Painter

UPDATE: FROM PAINTER'S FOSTER MOM

Hello, my name is Painter, and I am about 3yrs old maybe a little younger. I roamed the streets of a little town in Arkansas for my first year untill I was hit by a car and was rescued by Paws and Claws, Dr. Fletcher tried to save my rear leg but it had to be amputated, so I am considered special needs, but I can run and play with the fastest of dogs, and have no problem getting up and down stairs. I do have some issues that my foster mom will explain to you, and I am a very smart dog too! I love my foster family but would love to have my own perminant spot to live and play. I would probably do better with older kids and bigger dogs, but I am good around cats too. I am about 50 pounds and am up to date on my vaccinations, and heartworm meds, I also get Advantage once a month, I love any kind of food and all treats......I DO NOT have to take any Medication and am a very healthy doggie, oh yeah and Im neutered too, I love squeaky toys and playing fetch, please at least give me a chance and call about me!

MEET Cubella

Cubella is a sweet little fluffy mix who is in search of a forever home. Cubella is about 4 months old and weighed a dainty 21.5 pounds at her vet visit on June 16th. Cubella is in doing great in her foster home, she has foster brothers and sisters of all ages and sizes and gets along well with everyone. She has started crate, house and leash training. Cubella is spayed and is ready for her forever family.

From Sadie and Deigo's family

We have adopted two dogs from Second Hand Hounds/Paws & Claws New England and we wanted to share that both experiences have been EXCELLENT....i wanted to write a note to share what a great organization this is as there are so many dogs/organizations on PETFINDER, its nice to read about good experiences...First of all,.they take excellent care of their dogs/cats while they are being fostered, they are an amazing group of selfless volunteers. Communicationl wise, they always get right back to be both before and after the adoption and I was so impressed they wanted a GOOD FIT for the dogs and the families (not just trying to "move dogs through".....our first adoption was last summer a beagle mix we named Sadie (found on a road side and thankfully brought to this agency and not the pound)...she has been an amazing pleasure ....she has learned to heel well on her leash, we walk everyday, rain , shine or snow! She has learned some agility jumping this summer and is a lover of all humans, she is my sidekick!.....Since we enjoyed Sadie so much we decided to adopt again this summer (so many dogs need homes and we have lots of love to give)....this time i contacted Judy (sadies foster mom) and she was SOOO HELPFUL in answering questions about a second dog, what is the best temperment/ male or female,etc....she again had the perfect fit for us....we got Diego about a week ago now, he fits in like he was made for our home...He and Sadie had a short adjusment period but are now playing like two schoolmates....Diego is a pug/chihuaha and as sweet as he is cute.....They both came to us with P.E.T transport all they way from Arkansas and they too have a very good track record for bringing these last chance dogs up north....Picking the dogs up from transport is so exciting and to see all the beautiful dogs getting off transport is simply amazing....I thank Judy and all the volunteers without them we would not have Sadie and Diego our two GEMS!!

From Taco's new family:

My husband and I looked at many, many doggies on PetFinder.com in hopes of finding that special one that would be perfect for us. When we came across an adorable little pup named Taco, we couldn't resist inquiring. Although Taco's foster home was over a thousand miles away, the folks at Secondhand Hounds told us all we wanted to know... and believe me, we wanted to know a LOT. They answered all of our (many) questions honestly and quickly to help us make an informed decision. When we decided that Taco was the right pup for us, they walked us through all the steps of adoption, staying in constant communication with us and gave some helpful new doggie advice along the way. Pick-up day was such a wonderful experience as there were several other families waiting for their special delivery as well! When little Taco came off that truck it was like he instantly knew we were his forever mommy and daddy. Taco has turned out to be everything Secondhand Hounds said and more! He has adjusted to our new home very quickly, and before we knew it he was sleeping without a peep and patiently waiting for us to come home from work. The cats are accepting him into our home and the he's the hit of the neighborhood-- complete strangers stop to tell us how cute and sweet he is! Our adopted pup has brought such happiness to our lives and taught us wonderful things no human could ever do. If you're thinking about adopting a doggie, we highly recommend adopting from Secondhand Hounds... you won't regret it!

"I discovered Liz through Petfinder during black dog awareness month. I talked with Liz's foster mom and decided she would be the prefect fit to my family. Paws and Claws talked with me and help me make a informed decision on adopting Liz. Liz did well coming into my family. We love her very much and we would adopt from Paws and Claws again!! Tamy(Sasha's) Adoptive family had this to say:

We picked her up at 10lbs and now she is now 23lbs and getting bigger quickly!! She still has a lot to learn,, but she is getting there. Going to take her to classes in a week or so. She is a doll!!!

Again, we want to thank you so much for giving us a wonderful gift of life. She is a crazy little pup so she fits in well with our family!! Your organization is Wonderful and I would definitely recommend anyone to you, in fact I already have mentioned you to a few people who will be looking in the Near future. You have been very honest, and kept us up to date on any information you have discovered even now, 2 months later. I don’t think Many organizations would do that. Thank you and I will defiantly send more pictures as she gets older.
