VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are currently looking for foster homes! We provide ongoing support to all our foster families and could not sustain our efforts without them. Fosters provide us with invaluable information about each dog. This information allows us to select homes best suited for each of our Goldens. The more fosters we have, the more dogs we can save. If you interested in helping start a rescued Golden Retriever off on the "right paw", please visit our website and complete a foster application today!
If you aren't able to foster, please contact us to see what other exciting volunteer opportunities are available!
Who We Are
We are a network of volunteers based in New England. We serve New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, parts of New York and New Jersey. We have a large network of volunteers who are dedicated to helping homeless Goldens find forever homes. We work to save homeless Golden retrievers from shelters, municipal pounds, and dogs turned in to us directly by owners who can no longer care for them. We do our best to assess each dog's medical needs, temperament, behavior, habits and exercise needs. Each dog receives any necessary vet care including all vaccinations and are spayed/neutered before adoption if old enough. We then carefully select homes based on the needs of each individual Golden.
Our adoption process begins when a homeless Golden Retreiver is brought into rescue. Each dog is first provided a medical assessment and any necessary treatment including spay or neuter, heartworm, and vaccinations. We begin evaluating each dog's personality and temperament from the moment they are welcomed into our rescue. We attempt to assess each dog's behavior with other dogs, children, adults, and other animals (when available). We observe our dogs to determine as best we can their degree of house training, crate training, leash walking skills, knowledge of commands, ability to ride in cars, general activity level and exercise needs. From this information we are able to select the home best suited for each dog.
Adopting a friend
In order to be considered for any of our dogs, you MUST complete an application online - go to our website www.sunshinegoldenrescue.com to fill out the online application.
We do not have a facility to visit. Most of our dogs are fostered in private homes. Only APPROVED applicants can arrange to meet the dog we feel is a good match.
Adopting a Sunshine Rescue Golden is a privilege. These amazing dogs have endured less than perfect lives yet still retain their desire to offer unconditional love. It is because of their generous spirits and forgiving nature that we see finding homes for them as an awesome responsibility. We therefore, select only the very best homes for each dog.
Rescue Goldens come with "baggage". Most will need some training - this includes house training in many instances. All adopters MUST demonstrate an understanding of the nature of rescue and a willingness to work with their dog if needed. It is always WELL worth the effort!
ADOPTION PROCESS:
1. Submission of application
2. Vet reference check
3. Phone Interview
4. Home visit
5. Adoption committee approval
6. Signing of adoption contract and payment of adoption fee:
$450 for Goldens under age 7
$350 for seniors (age 7 and up), special needs Goldens, Golden mixes and Labs
$250 for "golden hearted" (non golden mixes)
Our adoption process begins with your application. We review all applications and choose those we think seem to offer a life best suited for one of our rescue Goldens. We do not work on a first come, first served basis. If your application is selected for further consideration, you will be notified. We will call your vet to verify that you have been a responsible pet owner in the past. We will next complete a telephone interview. The telephone interview allows us to gather more information about you and your lifestyle. Following the phone interview, should we feel we may be able to match one of our Goldens to your family, we will set up a home visit. Home visits are mandatory and ALL members of the family must be there. A SGRR representative will come to your home, usually with a dog, at an agreed upon day and time. The SGRR representative will need to see all areas of your home and yard. Following the home visit you will be notified within a few days as to whether or not you are approved for adoption of a Sunshine Golden.
After all information is gathered the adoption committee decides whether or not an applicant is approved. Once approved, families will work with an adoption coordinator to find the best match. The process can take some time, so please be patient. Even if you are approved as an adopter, it can take time for the right dog to be placed with you. Please understand that the dog you are initially interested in may not be a good match or may have already been placed with another family. We will work with you to select a dog who best matches your lifestyle.
The adoption fee for Goldens under 7 years of age is $450; for Golden mixes, senior and special needs Goldens and Labs 7 and up it is $350; and for our "golden hearted" non-golden mixes it is $250. This includes all vaccinations, spaying or neutering, any necessary medical treatments, and transportion fees.
Adoptions are completed with the signing of an adoption contract. Under the terns of the contract, a SGRR dog may NEVER be given away or sold. If an adopter can no longer keep their rescue Golden , we must be notified immediately so that we may bring the Golden back into rescue and find another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. We also require adopters to agree to follow up visits as needed. We are committed to our dogs before, during and after adoption!
