IMPROVE THE LIVES OF SHELTER ANIMALS BY BECOMING A M.H.S. VOLUNTEER.
Volunteers are the backbone of our shelter, and the angels to our animals.
Help is needed in the following areas:
Walking and Socialization of dogs (age requirement is 21 years of age) MHS holds orientation sessions for new volunteers (15 years of age and up) on the first Friday of every month at 5pm here at our shelter. If interested in attending the next volunteer orientation, or if you are generally interested in helping MHS please contact us at
Thank you everyone! With your help, support, and donations we were able to take in and adopt out 1,012 cats and kittens in 2008! Over 400 were taken from the streets and abandoned homes of Meriden. We were also able to adopt out and care for 236 dogs!
Thank you for your continued support for our animals!
We are closed to the public Monday and Tuesday, but our lobby is always open for donation drop offs or to pick up information.
Appointments can be made Adoption Process
We have applications for both our cats and dogs that potential adopters must fill out. You can email us for the application request
WE WILL BE APPROVING APPLICATIONS SAME DAY IN MOST CASES (for cats and kittens only)! If you rent or lease you need to bring your lease agreement or a letter from your landlord okaying adoption. Feline applications take anywhere from 1 to 2 days to process although we try and process them as quickly as possible.
Canine applications take 1 to 3 days to process, if there are other dogs in the family a interaction must be conducted before adoption. All members of the household must come and meet the dog. An application must be completed before a dog can be interacted with, but dogs can be viewed in their outdoor pens most days weather pending
We do this to make sure that this is the proper match for you and our dog. Many of our dogs come from abusive or neglectful situations and often have issues we try and solve before adoptions, but to make sure that this will be a forever adoption we go to many lengths to screen homes
