Our Pet List

Featured Pet

In honor of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, why not take a look at Herbie, our senior Beagle? Herbie is a nice calm boy who loves to go on leisurely walks. Click on Herbie's picture for more information.

About Us...

We are a not-for-profit no-kill animal shelter and rescue facility. Many of our animals are taken from high risk situations such as kill pounds, cruelty investigations, and private residents who can no longer care for their animals. Our organization is privately run and is supported solely on donations from the public.

WE DO NOT RECEIVE ANY FUNDING FROM THE CITY OF MERIDEN OR STATE OF CT.

From all of us here at M.H.S. we thank you for your continued support for our animals.

Upcoming Events

Bake Sale

Come on down to the shelter on November 21st and 22nd to pick out some yummy treats from our bake sale! Nothing compliments a visit with our super sweet animals like some sugary cookies and other treats.

Fill-A-Truck At Cromwell Wal-Mart

We'll be at the Cromwell Wal-Mart on December 5th collecting desperately need supplies for the animals. Our volunteers will give you a wish list at the door so you know exactly what we need. All donations are appreciated so much by our animals and by us.

PLEASE HELP !

We have over 120 cats and kittens at our shelter. In order to be able to save more of them, we are looking for families to adopt the ones we have here, Otherwise we will not be able to help anymore that are in need.

If you and your family are looking to adopt, please think of our cats here... We have every size, color and age and all are in need of loving homes.

We are open from 12-6pm Wednesday thru Sunday.

Urgent Need :

WE ARE IN NEED OF A VETERINARIAN TO COME DOWN TO OUR SHELTER, ONCE PER MONTH, TO GIVE VACCINATIONS AND TEST OUR ANIMALS. IF YOU ARE A VETERINARIAN, OR PERHAPS KNOW ONE THAT WOULD HELP, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT: meridensociety@sbcglobal.net

Ways You Can Help

Paws In Need

Grampy and Chicken are two senior dogs that need dental surgery. Dental surgeries can be very pricey and we need your help to get these two the care they need. To read their stories and make a safe, online donation, visit them at our blog.

Spay/Neuter Your Pets

You might not understand how spaying and neutering your pets helps us, but let us assure you that it does. Any kittens or puppies born have the potential to end up in a shelter. Even if you find them all homes there's no guarantee that they'll keep those homes forever. Every home that your kittens and puppies find, is also one less home for the animals in the shelter. Thanks to many low-cost clinics and programs, spay and neuter surgeries are now available to families that couldn't afford them before.

For a list of low-cost spay/neuter options, visit our blog.

Sponsor-A-Pet

Have you taken a fancy to one of our friends here on Petfinder, but aren't able to bring him home? Now you can help out your favorite pets by sponsoring them. Sponsorship helps keep all of our animals healthy, happy, and comfortable. Simply click on the 'Sponsor me!' banner on each pet's profile to make a donation just for their care.

Adopting a friend

Our hours of operation:

MONDAY AND TUESDAY CLOSED
Wednesday 12pm-6pm
Thursday 12pm-6pm
Friday 12pm - 6pm
Saturday 12pm-6pm
Sunday 12pm-6pm

We are closed to the public Monday and Tuesday, but our lobby is always open for donation drop offs or to pick up information.

Hours are subject to change due to fundraisers, weather and staffing. Dogs can be viewed in their out door enclosures, weather pending.

Appointments can be made

Adoption Process

We have applications for both our cats and dogs that potential adopters must fill out. You can email us for the application request which can be sent by email, or fax, and applications are always avalible at our facility.

WE WILL BE APPROVING APPLICATIONS SAME DAY IN MOST CASES (for cats and kittens only)! If you rent or lease you need to bring your lease agreement or a letter from your landlord okaying adoption.

Feline applications take anywhere from 1 to 2 days to process although we try and process them as quickly as possible.

Canine applications take 5 to 7 days to process, if there are other dogs in the family a interaction must be conducted before adoption. All members of the household must come and meet the dog. An application must be completed before a dog can be interacted with, but dogs can be viewed in their outdoor pens most days weather pending

We do this to make sure that this is the proper match for you and our dog. Many of our dogs come from abusive or neglectful situations and often have issues we try and solve before adoptions, but to make sure that this will be a forever adoption we go to many lengths to screen homes
