"Saving Lives One Adoption at a Time Since 1893"

STOLEN. On January 23, someone broke into the shelter and stole the donation box. If you have any information, please contact Meriden Police.

To whoever stole the money, you have taken food, medical care, and shelter from an animal in need who was either abandoned, given up, abused or neglected. You are a heartless person. If you do have one tiny bit of a heart, bring the money back.

Blog News

At MHS every animal is special to staff and volunteers, but we sometimes can't help but grow a bond with certain pets. Click on little Tag's photo above to read the stories of some of our favorite animals from the past year.

About Us...

We are a not-for-profit no-kill animal shelter and rescue facility. Many of our animals are taken from high risk situations such as kill pounds, cruelty investigations, and private residents who can no longer care for their animals. Our organization is privately run and is supported solely on donations from the public.

WE DO NOT RECEIVE ANY FUNDING FROM THE CITY OF MERIDEN OR THE STATE OF CT.

There has been some confusion lately and, as our part in clearing it up, we would like to emphasize that we are in no way connected to either the Connecticut Humane Society or the Humane Society of the United States.

From all of us here at MHS, we thank you for your continued support of our animals.

PLEASE HELP!

We have over 120 cats and kittens at our shelter. In order to save more, we are looking for families to adopt the ones we have here. Otherwise we will not be able to help any more that are in need.

If you and your family are looking to adopt, please think of our cats here... We have every size, color and age and all are in need of loving homes.

Meriden Humane Society 2010 Calendars

With the new year comes a new calendar and we think you should ring in the new year with the cuddly animals of MHS. The year's fundraisers are premarked, so you'll never miss an event, and each month there's a sweet reminder of why animals are so special. Each calendar is $10 and you can buy them in our lobby.

iGive

Doing a little shopping? Do you want to make your purchases count for a little more? Sign up for iGive by clicking on this link and a percentage of every purchase you make through the websites in iGive's online mall will be donated to the Meriden Humane Society.

Spay/Neuter Your Pets

You might not understand how spaying and neutering your pets helps us, but let us assure you that it does. Any kittens or puppies born have the potential to end up in a shelter. Even if you find them all homes there's no guarantee that they'll keep those homes forever. Every home that your kittens and puppies find is also one less home for the animals in the shelter. Thanks to many low-cost clinics and programs, spay and neuter surgeries are now available to families that couldn't afford them before.

For a list of low-cost spay/neuter options, visit our blog.

Sponsor-A-Pet

Have you taken a fancy to one of our friends here on Petfinder, but aren't able to bring him home? Now you can help out your favorite pets by sponsoring them. Sponsorship helps keep all of our animals healthy, happy, and comfortable. Simply click on the 'Sponsor me!' banner on each pet's profile to make a donation just for their care.

Adopting a friend

Our hours of operation:

MONDAY AND TUESDAY CLOSED
Wednesday 12pm-6pm
Thursday 12pm-6pm
Friday 12pm - 6pm
Saturday 12pm-6pm
Sunday 12pm-6pm

We are closed to the public Monday and Tuesday, but our lobby is always open for donation drop offs or to pick up information.

Hours are subject to change due to fundraisers, weather and staffing. Dogs can be viewed in their outdoor enclosures, weather permitting.

Adoption Process

We have applications for both our cats and dogs that potential adopters must fill out. You can email us for the application request which can be sent by email, or fax, and applications are always avaiable at our facility.

We will try to approve application the same day for for cats and kittens only)
If you rent or lease you need to bring your lease agreement or a letter from your landlord okaying adoption.

Feline applications take anywhere from 1 to 2 days to process although we try and process them as quickly as possible.

Canine applications take 5 to 7 days to process, if there are other dogs in the family, a interaction must be conducted before adoption. All members of the household must come and meet the dog. An application must be completed before a dog can be interacted with, but dogs can be viewed in their outdoor pens most days weather permitting

Our policies are to make sure a good match is made between you and one of our dogs. Many of our dogs come from abusive or neglectful situations and often have issues that we try to resolve before adoptions. However, to make sure that each adoption will be forever adoption, we go to great lengths to screen homes

MERIDEN ANIMAL CONTROL

Meriden Animal Control and Meriden Humane Society share the same building. In helping our community and by sharing a common goal, MHS pulls directly from our ACO (besides private citizens) to help place the astronomical numbers of dogs that are coming into the building. Our ACO is picking up small to large dogs abandoned on the streets of our city daily. Our ACO has 36 kennels that have been filled for the last seven months.

Most are adoptable and loving dogs and it is a shame that no one is coming to claim them. The dogs sit there waiting for you to visit and adopt them. Because of our location, people are finding it relatively easy to "dump" these unwanted animals off the highway, on Research Parkway, and off the East Main Street exit.

We are in need of adopters, foster homes and loving, caring individuals to help us find these animals homes.

In the upcoming weeks, we at MHS will be taking pictures of the dogs at Animal Control and listing them on our site. Maybe together we can help in placing the horrible numbers of unwanted dogs in our community.
