Helping Paws president, Rene Knapp, has been named to the 2003 National Register, Who's Who in Business and will be on file at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The organization was first noticed by Dunham Bradstreet because of their September 11th rescue in which Helping Paws went to New York City after the tragedy and relocated over 100 cats and about 20 dogs into new homes.
Who We Are
Helping Paws is a charitable, 501c3 organization dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, abused and neglected animals, getting them their necessary medical care and adopting them into good homes. Helping Paws maintains a no kill policy and utilizes foster homes rather than a kennel type atmosphere. Our animals (primarily cats) are treated as members of the family in their temporary homes where their personality is assessed as to the type of person they need in order to lead a quality life.
Helping Paws president, Rene Knapp, writes a column for a city newspaper entitled Pet Talk which deals with informational and emotional topics regarding animals. The organization also maintains a senior Pet Match program in which senior cats and dogs are placed with their senior counterparts with no adoption fee. Although Helping Paws does not accept owner surrender animals, we do have an owner placement program in which animals can be listed on our website if they meet the proper criteria, i.e. are altered, non-aggressive, etc. The organization also has a spay/neuter program to help people on fixed incomes or those caring for stray and feral colonies to alter and feed these forgotten felines. And most important, Rene Knapp, offers a behavior consult to people who would like to keep their cats but do not know how to work through behavior issues. She is even willing to come to the home for a modest donation to the organization and help work through the cat's issues.

Adopting a friend
Adoption criteria for a Helping Paws animal is fairly simple. We do not allow declawing under any conditions. Our cats are primarily indoor cats and we only allow indoor/outdoor adoptions if the cat has spent most of its life outdoors and the new owner lives in a safe area, but we do encourage cat owners to utilize outdoor cat pens and fences. Once a cat has been adopted from Helping Paws, if an owner finds themselves in dire circumstance, our agreement is that the owner will contact us and allow us to help them place the cat. If we do not have space to take the cat back physically, we will work with the owner through our website and newspaper ads to place the kitty.
All our cats are spayed and neutered before adoption - our kittens are twelve weeks old when they go to their new homes. They are all tested for Leukemia and FIV before placment.
While we actually have very few dogs, our criteria is that there is a fenced in yard or large outside kennel for any large breed dog. Any aggressive breeds adopted through Helping Paws must go through a dog obedience course after they are adopted. If for any reason an owner cannot keep their dog after adoption, the organization will help place the dog but not physically take the dog back as Helping Paws deals primarily with puppies and we do not have the facilities for adult dogs.
