Who We Are
New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare Society is a private, non-profit organization established in 1977. Our Animal Shelter is located just north of Danbury, CT off of I-84 in the vicinity of Candlewood Lake.
The mission of our Shelter is to offer refuge, medical care, and the opportunity for a second chance for life to needy dogs and cats; to protect animals from cruelty or neglect; to foster a public sentiment of humanity and gentleness toward all living creatures; to encourage and promote responsible pet ownership; and to reduce companion animal overpopulation through humane education and spay/neuter advocacy.

Donating Funds
Monetary donations are also an option, of course! Donations can be mailed to : NFSAW, P.O. Box 8221, New Fairfield, CT 06812. In addition, we are now accepting donations online through PayPal. New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All gifts are tax deductible in accordance with existing IRS regulations.

Adopt a Kennel! To celebrate the arrival of our new dog kennels, we have started a new program for those of you who want to hear first-hand how your generous donations to NFSAW are helping specific animals at our shelter. We are calling it our Adopt-a-Kennel Program, although in actuality it applies to both our dog kennels and our cat cages. To enroll, all you have to do is make a donation of at least $150 and let us know that you want to "adopt a kennel"! Also, please specify whether you prefer dog or cat updates. You will be assigned a dog kennel or cat cage, and our Shelter Manager, Sherri Ruffler, will send you regular e-mail updates on the "activity" in your "adopted kennel" for one year! This is a really fun way to hear about the wonderful care our residents receive while they're with us, and also to hear about all the happy endings for NFSAW's dogs and cats!
The Wally Fund! Wally was a very special dog who was adopted from a high-kill shelter. When he died, a generous donor established The Wally Fund to help pay veterinary expenses and other fees associated with NFSAW's efforts to save at-risk dogs and cats. To donate to The Wally Fund, simply send a check to the above address, or use the "Donate" button, and indicate that your donation should go toward The Wally Fund. Your donation will truly save a life!
Please note that every gift to NFSAW represents a gift to our total mission as stated above. Gifts designated for a particular project or animal are used as requested until that project is completed or until that animal is adopted. Any remaining money is put to use where it is needed most.
Other Ways to Help!
Shop at our Cafe Press store! We sell a wide variety of items displaying our logo. Everything from t-shirts to mugs to bumper stickers. A portion of all proceeds comes directly to NFSAW! Great gift idea!
Recycle your empty ink cartridges at Staples and give them our phone number: 203-746-2925. We will get coupons that we can use for office supplies.
Instead of using Google, use Goodsearch and set us as your charity of choice. We get a donation each time you do an Internet search.
Are you getting a new car? If so, what are you doing with your old car? Donate it to us through Petco's vehicle donation program! Just name New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare Society as the recipient of the proceeds, and Petco will take care of the rest. We recently got a generous donation through this program. What a nice surprise! (And if you've got an extra RV, boat, or motorcycle sitting around, Petco will take those too!)
If your company offers a Charitable Contribution Program, please let us know. We would love to be on the list! We are now a member of the Independent Charities of America, so if your company uses that database, we are on it.
Use iGive when you're shopping online, and at no charge to you, we will get a donation when you make a purchase. Just download the "iGive Button" (VERY easy!) and your computer will automatically process the donation. You don't have to do anything. Downloading the button is easy, and you will not get spammed. If you're not comfortable using iGive, please consider using Adopt-a-Shelter. It's the same type of thing, but you don't need to register or download anything! Just type 06812 into the location search box, and we'll come up in the list. Then shop away!
Cell Phone, Laptop, Gold & Silver Jewelry Recycling
Our recycling program is great for both NFSAW and the environment! If you live locally, you can drop your items off in our donation boxes at the following locations: Tina's Hair Creations in Brewster, Thayer Driver Education in Danbury (next to Jim Barbarie's), Sandbox Daycare (Bethel and both Danbury locations), NF Stop & Shop, and New Fairfield Animal Hospital. If you don't live locally, click on the link, and then click the "shipping" tab at the top of the page. This will allow you to print a shipping label so you can send in your items. Use the shelter's information at the bottom of our Petfinder page to fill in the organization name and address, but for "Contact Name, E-mail, and Phone", please use Suzanne Glynn, smp0807@hotmail.com, 203-746-4080. If you have any questions about this program, please contact Suzanne! (There is no need to register on the site. NFSAW is registered already.)

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8:45 a.m.- 2:45 p.m. Saturday 9am-3pm
Sunday: 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Closed Tuesday and Friday
Weekend hours can vary, as can hours during Holiday weeks. If you plan to visit us during those times, please call to confirm our hours of operation.
When you come to the shelter you will need to fill out our application and give the shelter a few days to review it for approval before taking your new pet home.We will not "hold" any animal until an application has been filled out and your family has actually met the cat or dog you are interested in. Senior citizens, ask us about our Senior to Senior adoption program. We will waive the adoption fee for any senior citizen who adopts a senior cat or dog.
Although our mission is primarily to help the animals of New Fairfield and Sherman, we also want to help as many animals as possible, especially if we have available space. We make every effort to contact other shelters in Connecticut, especially high-kill shelters, to offer our assistance taking animals that are on "Death Row". We also work with several rescue groups in Tennessee, where the euthanasia rate is extremely high. The dogs that come from Tennessee are transported via a network of volunteer drivers. All pets adopted from NFSAW have received thorough veterinary care and, age/size permitting, are already altered. Please call or e-mail us for more information. Adoption price for cats/kittens includes feline AIDS/Leukemia test, distemper vaccine, rabies vaccine, deworming, and spay or neuter surgery.
Adoption price for dogs/puppies includes distemper, rabies, and kennel cough vaccines, heartworm test and spay/neuter surgery. All of our dogs and puppies receive monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
The shelter would love some new volunteers to spend time with our wonderful dogs and cats. If you are interested, please contact us for more information. We are also looking for people who may be interested in fostering animals at home. Often times we have special needs animals who would be much happier in the comfort of a "real home" rather than the shelter. Please call or email for more details.
