Who We Are:

In 2006, we became Connecticut’s first Municipal Animal Control Shelter to add the word “Care” to our title. Our treatment and attitude toward our pets is top notch. While in shelter care, it is our intention to make each adoptable animal’s life count, to make his or her stay bearable and comfortable until a loving home is found.

We have a no-kill philosophy which simply means, every adoptable animal is guaranteed a second chance. Dogs are given fair evaluations by a highly respected, professional dog trainer and behaviorist. With this ambitious approach, adoption becomes the most vital aspect for our success, therefore we value and are most appreciative of your support, through either adoption or referrals to friends and family.

In an effort to reduce the population of homeless animals, we promote spaying & neutering. Therefore it is the shelter policy that NO animal leaves our shelter unaltered.

We shelter a variety of animals, primarily dogs and cats but also rabbits, ferrets, little furries like hamsters & guinea pigs and on occasion, birds & reptiles.

You can find our featured pet of the week in the Sunday edition of The Stamford Advocate and the weekly Stamford Times newspapers.

We work to create a mutually beneficial environment for animals and the public at large. We provide rabies control, impound stray animals, investigate and prevent cruelty to animals, attend to sick or injured animals, and find homes for adoptable animals.

Our Shelter Manager:

Laurie Hollywood became the shelter’s manager in March 2005. She has worked with animals since 1987. She has worked as a Veterinary Technician, and as an Equine Hospital Manager. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics with a concentration in Management. Ms. Hollywood lives in Newtown, CT with her husband Collin, 4 pound pups, 2 horses and 2 barn cats.

We Offer:

~ FREE dog training for the public and for our shelter pups, every Wednesday evening.
~ High quality food and supplements to the animals and daily outdoor exercise to our dogs.
~ Clean kennels and medical care to shelter animals when needed.
~ Low cost spay/neuter referrals through our veterinarian.
~ $10 spay/neuter service (SNIP) to owners of pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
~ Periodic adoption events ~ Phone advice ~ Volunteer Opportunities
~ TLC to all of our companion animals.

Our Partnership with OPIN, Inc. (Outreach to Pets In Need)

Formed in response to the public’s desire to make qualifying tax deductible contributions to help shelter animals, OPIN was co-founded by shelter volunteers and is an all-volunteer registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is dedicated to meeting the special needs of the animals of Stamford Animal Care and Control. Funding is used for care not provided by the City of Stamford: preventive health care and extraordinary medical needs; supplies and public education; and training and evaluation of the shelter dogs in order to make them more adoptable canine citizens.

OPIN will also act as an advocate to bring about awareness of the need for a new, state-of-the-art and more inviting Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center. It will focus its efforts on fundraising and gaining community support.

On March 1, 2007, OPIN held its organization meeting with Shelter Manager, Laurie Hollywood and a working partnership was formed. OPIN recognizes Laurie’s success, commitment to public safety and compassion toward the well-being of the shelter’s homeless animals and supports the no-kill philosophy for which the shelter has become recognized.

We hope you will share in our vision and our efforts to Outreach to Pets In Need - to make a better life for our homeless friends. Your generosity is truly appreciated. Thank you.

All contributions to OPIN are fully tax deductible.

Donations should be made payable to: OPIN, Inc.
