Originally founded in 1902, the Humane Society's present location on 55th Street was built in 2001.
The Humane Society is a 501(c)3 private, nonprofit corporation governed by a Board of Directors composed of volunteers from the community who are dedicated to animal welfare. The Society is not controlled or funded by any statewide or national organization. Donations made to national animal welfare groups do not benefit our local pets.
It is the mission of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley to protect and enhance the lives of companion animals by promoting healthy relationships between pets and people.
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley shelters lost, homeless, neglected, and abused pets. We are an open-door shelter, accepting all companion animals. We work in cooperation with other animal shelters and breed rescue groups. Wildlife and reptiles go to the groups that can give them the proper care. We provide low-cost spay and neuter sevices, humane education, animal rescue, and animal cruelty and neglect investigations.
The Society is a member of the Metro Denver Shelter Alliance (MDSA) and the Asilomar Accord and we work collaboratively with other groups to save animals and reduce euthanasia. Members of these groups utilize the same language to define healthy, treatable, unhealthy/untreatable animals and adhere to a standard formula for the live release rate. In this way, the public can have a better understanding of the pet overpopulation problem in their community and provide support that will best help the animals.
We have a Foster Care Department that works with dedicated foster parent volunteers in our community to help animals in need of extra care. These are often orphaned, injured, or ill animals that need time and a quiet place to recuperate. Foster families also shelter animals for which we simply do not have kennel space during overcrowded times in our shelter.
The progressive adoption program of the Humane Society of Boulder Valley places thousands of lost, abandoned and unwanted companion animals with loving guardians. Each year we care for more than 8,000 animal companions! We provide the best of care, and we are dedicated to save animals and improve lives. There is no space or time limit on an animal's stay in our adoption center.
