High Country Newfoundland Club: Who We Are

High Country Newfoundland Club Inc. (HCNC), is a regional club of the Newfoundland Club of America, Inc. HCNC formed a rescue and re-homing operation for Newfoundlands in 1989. We are licensed by the Colorado State Department of Agriculture as a foster home rescue group. We are incorporated in the State of Colorado as a not-for-profit corporation.

HCNC "officially" serves the states of Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. We also unofficially help with dogs in Utah, North & South Dakota, and Montana that are in need. (There is no NCA regional club serving those areas.) If you are out of our service area we will be glad to help you find the one nearest you.

You may also go to the Newfoundland Club of America website and look under "rescue" to find a geographic listing of affiliated rescue groups. That website is located at: www.newfdogclub.org

News

Many thanks to Harrison Memorial Hospital for re-newing our medical grant. They enable us to keep our adoption fees low while giving our rescues the best of possible medical care.

How Our Program Works

We re-home approximately 15-25 Newfoundlands each year who are either given up by their owners or picked up from shelters. Newfoundlands who are adopted through our program are generally 2-5 years of age, though some are in older or younger. Occasionally we get a "senior citizen" who is over 8 years of age needing a retirement home.

Very few puppies are placed through our rescue program. All Newfs placed through rescue are vet-checked, neutered or spayed, and are microchipped.

Adoptions are made on a matched basis, based on the background and needs of the Newfoundland and the prospective owners. All dogs are matched to applications on file. If we don't have a match for a dog on file then the dog stays in foster care until we get one. Matching the dog's personality to the owner's expectations prevents the dog from passing from home to home.

The adoption fee is approximately $250. The fee can vary, depending on what our expenses run - we do try not to go too far into the red ink if we can help it! The adoption fee helps cover the costs associated with care of the dogs previous to their adoption. The actual acoption fee for a dog may vary, depending upon the actual expenses incurred.

We never know when the next dog will arrive. If you are interested in giving a Newf a home please contact us for an application.

Referrals

We also will refer to breeders who have older dogs (already neutered) for placement when there are no dogs in foster care needing good homes.

Adopting a friend

If you are interested in acquiring a Newfoundland dog for your family from the High Country Newfoundland Club, Inc. (HCNC) Rescue Group please email or call to receive an adoption application. We will also be glad to put you in touch with a Newfoundland Rescue Group near you if you are out of our service area.

We keep applications on file for a 6-month time period. If you wish your application to remain current, please contact us. If you obtain a dog from elsewhere or change your mind about getting a Newfoundland through our rescue program, please notify us so that we can remove you from the current applications files.
