About

Colorado Animal Welfare League (CAWL) is a 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization founded with the mission to protect homeless animals in Colorado and the surrounding states of Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, and New Mexico. We are currently made up of a small group of committed volunteers trying to save one animal at a time. As an all volunteer administration, any donations made to CAWL go directly to servicing the needs of the animals we save.

The focus of CAWL is to expedite the adoption of difficult to place animals such as those with black fur, advanced age, or special needs. We rescue a lot of animals that would otherwise be euthanized for medical conditions, fearful behaviors, or just simply just for being a black dog in a shelter full of black dogs. Our rescue animals stay with foster families until their adoption while we work toward growing into a shelter. Thus, most of our expenses come from foster support and veterinary bills to treat our sick and injured animals.

Our goal is to also be very proactive in animal welfare and to advance the awareness of the need for spaying and neutering our pets to reduce overpopulation. Our mobile spay/neuter clinic, expected to be completed in May 2010, is slated to be taken to rural areas with limited veterinary resources, inner-city areas, and Indian reservations where spaying and neutering will only happen if it is nearly free and comes to them. Our intention is to work with local vets to provide the spaying and neutering service at no cost to the public. Donations will then also be used to defray the costs associated with paying the veterinarians for their time, medications and supplies, and the operating costs for the mobile clinic itself.

Adopting a friend

We require:

  1. A completed application. (While we encourage you to let us know on your application if one of our animals has captured your interest, we use this simply as a guide for matching and your listing of specific animal in no way implies claim to this particular animal) Dog Adoption Application or Cat Adoption Application
  2. A phone interview
  3. A meet and greet with our CAWL pet and your family, including the pets in the family. We want to find the right home for our dogs and cats, and we want to find the right pet for your family.
Puppies:

We have found that puppies from the same litter tend to bond to one another, to their detriment, when adopted together. Therefore, we do not adopt out two puppies from the same litter to the same adopter.

** The general guideline is that puppies may be left alone, for no longer in hours than the number of months of their ages. Please do not apply for a young puppy if you intend to be gone all day.

CAWL is a foster based rescue and does NOT operate a physical shelter.
