How do we pick just one? They are all very special and worthy of new homes!

News

Last year we had two special weekends that we called Dawg House Days. The previous winter had been so harsh with blizzards many weekends, that many of the doghouses suffered a lot of damage. Coordinated by our great friend, Deb Griffin- master event planner (fullblownevents.com), we had around 60 volunteers come out and build new and much improved dog houses! Thanks to Deb, Cliff who designed the houses, Home Depot for donating gift cards so we could buy the wood needed, and many other companies that stepped up to the plate and donated so much! Sabel's landscaping also donated 32 trees- we are after all on the plains- no trees here!- and they were planted that weekend as well. This past fall, we had numerous other projects we wanted to get done and, thanks to the wonderful cadets at the Air Force Academy who donated several of their Sundays, we succeeded! Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help make Blue Lion a better place fo all the dogs!

Who We Are

Blue Lion Animal Rescue is a rescue and sanctuary dedicated to saving giant breeds of dogs including all kinds of Mastiffs, Great Danes, Newfoundlands and Great Pyrenees. The 35 acre ranch in Yoder, Colorado, 30 miles east of Colorado Springs, is one of the largest no-kill shelters in the country and provides a home to around 100 dogs. Many of these dogs come from shelters across the country where they were going to be euthanized because the dogs are too big and take up too much room or the people working there did not know how to handle the temperaments of some of the breeds of dogs and they are inaccurately labeled aggressive. Usually they are just scared. Often the volunteers at a shelter will recognize this and work tirelessly to find a rescue to take the dog. Enter Blue Lion. Volunteers have traveled across the nation to pick up these dogs and bring them back to the ranch where they are evaluated, spayed and neutered and, if possible, put up for adoption. Blue Lion provides loving adoptive homes for as many dogs as possible. Potential adopters are carefully screened to make sure that the right dog goes to the right home. The goal is to find the “forever” home that will consider the dog a part of the family- not just left outside in a yard. Some of the dogs at Blue Lion have endured severe abuse and neglect and have dispositions unlikely to win them new homes. Some have been court ordered to the rescue because of past aggression. All of these dogs will live out their lives romping on the ranch and enjoying the views of the Rocky Mountains. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and we sure appreciate all donations! It can cost a lot of money to get vet care and food for so many big dogs! You can donate through our website www.bluelionrescue.org.

Adopting a friend

We are always looking for wonderful loving homes for our adoptable dogs. The first step is to e-mail me, at bluelionrescue@yahoo.com, tell me about yourself and request an adoption application. We do background checks and home visits prior to having you come out to the ranch to meet the dogs. This is so we can make sure that the dog you are interested in is the right dog for your lifestyle and family. We want the adoption to be a win-win for everyone! The adoption fee varies with each dog.
