News

Watch our photoshow at http://www.photoshow.com/watch/RI8uX8dr We have Neapolitan Mastiff pups for adoption! Go to www.bluelionrescue.org to see them and read their bio! We have had some great adoptions lately including some of our seniors! Thanks to all those people willing to give them a loving home for their remaining days! Around eight months ago, Blue Lion took in a beautiful Boerboel named Tooken who was severely fear aggressive. I didn't know if she would ever come around and trust. But perseverence paid off! She is now letting me pet her, take her for walks and is even taking treats from strangers- sometimes! In November, we took in two feral fear aggressive Akitas (Laverne and Shirley) for Akita rescue. They wanted to see if I could get them to get over their fear. It's a very slow process. Laverne will actually come up and sniff my hand and take treats- as long as there is no eye contact. It's a big step in this process. I will keep everyone updated on their progress. As you can probably deduce, fear aggressiveness is the hardest behavioral issue to get over. Usually, it takes a very long time to get the dog to trust even one person.

Who We Are

Blue Lion Animal Rescue is a rescue and sanctuary dedicated to saving giant breeds of dogs including all kinds of Mastiffs, Great Danes, Newfoundlands and Great Pyrenees. The 35 acre ranch in Yoder, Colorado, 30 miles east of Colorado Springs, is one of the largest no-kill shelters in the country and provides a home to around 100 dogs. Many of these dogs come from shelters across the country where they were going to be euthanized because the dogs are too big and take up too much room or the people working there did not know how to handle the temperaments of some of the breeds of dogs and they are inaccurately labeled aggressive. Usually they are just scared. Often the volunteers at a shelter will recognize this and work tirelessly to find a rescue to take the dog. Enter Blue Lion. Volunteers have traveled across the nation to pick up these dogs and bring them back to the ranch where they are evaluated, spayed and neutered and, if possible, put up for adoption. Blue Lion provides loving adoptive homes for as many dogs as possible. Potential adopters are carefully screened to make sure that the right dog goes to the right home. The goal is to find the “forever” home that will consider the dog a part of the family- not just left outside in a yard. Some of the dogs at Blue Lion have endured severe abuse and neglect and have dispositions unlikely to win them new homes. Some have been court ordered to the rescue because of past aggression. All of these dogs will live out their lives romping on the ranch and enjoying the views of the Rocky Mountains. I started a line of greeting cards featuring some of the dogs of Blue Lion. See them and order some at www.uglydawgs.org We are a 501(c)(3) organization and we sure appreciate all donations! It can cost a lot of money to get vet care and food for so many big dogs! You can donate through our website www.bluelionrescue.org.
