WolfWood is a non-profit refuge and adoption center for wolf-dogs located outside of Ignacio, CO. We offer a safe haven to animals who would otherwise be put to death. While we are officially a wolf and wolf dog rescue center, we take in any animal in danger of euthanasia, including animals with little or no wolf content.
Adopting a friend
Our motto is "We've saved them once, we don't want to have to save them again."
First of all, only low percentage, well socialized, responsive animals are considered for adoption. These are often cases of mistaken identity, as with Reddog, or animals left to us because of a death in the family, divorce, or some other change in family circumstances, not because of any behavioral problem with the dog. All of the animals listed on petfinder have no known wolf parentage.
For any animal that is adopted, we require a large yard with a secure chain link fence with ground wire to prevent digging under. We prefer not to adopt to families with children because most of our animals are too energetic to be around small children (under the age of 10). We also require you to have some understanding about the special needs of our adoptable animals as well as the time available to invest in their socialization and care.
The very first step in adopting any animal is to make sure it is okay to own a large dog in your neighborhood (especially if you are renting). If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, first contact the refuge. Sending pictures of your yard and other animals you may have would be a great way to begin. Then we require that you come to the refuge and meet the animal and tour the facility. This provides you with a chance to meet the animal before you make a commitment and gives us the chance to meet you. If you decide that he/she is actually what you are looking for, we do have an adoption contract. Secondly, we need proof of the suitabililty of your fencing and yard as well as a recommendation from your veterinarian.
While this may seem like a lengthy process, it has helped us increase the chances that each placement will be a successful one.
