Romeo will steal your heart this Valentine's day. Our horse of the month for February is a 15 year old gray Arabian gelding who needs at least an intermediate rider who loves to have fun! Registered as Apple Hill Asharq, Romeo is a playful fellow and can be ridden English or Western.
Dominant in a herd, Romeo does well either solo or in a group setting with other geldings. He's an easy keeper, although he does occasionally crib when bored. Romeo was a stallion until he was ten, so he can't be turned out with mares. He would not be an ideal candidate for lots of riding on very hard ground, rocks, or cement, but is sound for arena riding and loves to work. Romeo needs a sponsor or adopter.
We can't adopt out the knight in shining armor, but we have the 'white horse'- can you see yourself riding into the sunset with Romeo? If so, call (303)-216-0141 or email jelena@cohpl.org

Please support the Horse Protection League with your online shopping. If you shop at Country Supply please use Country Care Code HPL to support our rescue efforts.
The Horse Protection League is a 501(c)3 non profit rescue organization. We take in abandoned, neglected, abused, or sometimes simply no longer wanted horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules, rehabilitate them to the best of our ability, and place them in loving, adoptive homes. Each of our horses is a lifetime committment for us. We do follow up on each and every adoptee forever, and will take any of our horses back at any time, for any reason, if the owner requests that we do so. We always need volunteers- come by and see us some time!
The first step to adopting a horse from the Horse Protection League is an adoption application. Call our barn manager, Gigi Ferrin, for information on getting an application. (303)-216-0141. I recommend visiting our Long Lake Ranch and filling out an application after looking around.
If and when your application is accepted, we ask that you spend some time with the lucky horse or pony on the ground. Then, everyone who will ride the animal regularly in its new home must ride it at least three times. If that goes well, as it usually does, we conduct a site visit to ascertain that the property on which the adoptee will be kept is safe and suitable. With all that finished, you are free to bring your new family member home.
We'll be in touch every few months for the first year, and about once a year after that. The brand inspection will be held for five months to a year so that we can make sure our horse is in the best place possible. You may sell, lease, trade, or give away your adoptee, but the new person must be approved by HPL.
Come Visit Us!
We are located at the historic Long Lake Ranch in Arvada, Colorado. Please come visit us! Volunteers are welcomed on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to noon and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Visitors may be accepted by appointment at other times. Please call or email for directions. It's a beautiful location, complete with a pair of nesting hawks and accomodations for up to seventeen horses. The barn was a stagecoach stop in the 1860's- it's fascinating to see the built in gunports in the walls. We're a friendly bunch as a general rule, and we're happy to train new folks with little or no horse experience.
The ranch is undergoing a ten year restoration, and will eventually be a museum as well as a horse rescue, with our barn manager acting as museum caretaker. The old house has a new roof, and changes happen every day with construction workers coming in and out. It's so exciting to watch everything take shape. Come see!
