Do Something Hot this Summer...
Adopt a Rescued Rabbit!

Baby, it's hot outside and our rabbits are dreaming of someplace cool.... at home with you!

San Diego HRS is teaming up with the County of San Diego Dept. of Animal Services to help find more homes for their adoptable rabbits this summer. Come see Central Shelter rabbits for adoption at:

PetsMART - Sport Arena
Saturday, July 29th, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
3610 Rosecrans Street
San Diego, CA

Stop by to meet adoptable rabbits and to have your rabbit care questions answered by HRS and shelter volunteers. All rabbits have been spayed or neutered and are used to using a litterbox. Application and adoption fee are required. Supplies will also be available for purchase at the time of adoption. Contact hrs@sandiegorabbits.org for more information. If you've been thinking of adopting a companion rabbit, NOW IS THE TIME!

Reduced Adoption Fees for Cats and Kittens

Throughout the summer months, the San Diego County Department of Animal Services has reduced its adoption fees for cats (6 months and older) from $58 to $29. Also, as part of the Better with a Buddy Program kittens can be adopted in pairs for a reduced fee ($58 for the first kitten and $29 for the second kitten). All cats and kittens are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for feline leukemia before they are released for adoption.

Welcome!

The County of San Diego operates three animal shelters – the “South Shelter” in Bonita, the “Central Shelter” in Mission Valley and the “North Shelter” Carlsbad. This page features animals available for adoption to the public at the Central Shelter only. Please visit the other two shelters' Petfinder.com sites by clicking the above highlighted shelter names.

Our Petfinder.com animal postings are maintained as supplementary adoption listings by our hard working shelter volunteers. While they make every effort to update these listings as often as possible, we recommend that you visit our main website for the most up-to-date list of adoptable animals. Of course, nothing beats visiting the shelters in person! Come on down and find your new companion animal today!

If you are looking for your lost pet, please visit http://www.sddac.com/ and go to "Lost and Found" on the left-hand menu. If your lost pet is found as a stray, but does not have tags or a microchip, it is critical that you find your pet before it is offered for adoption! Start calling shelters today, and go to our website and fill out a lost pet form!

Adopting a Friend

At any one time, the Department’s three shelters will have hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits available for adoption, of all types and varieties. Other domestic animals, such as birds, rodents, or reptiles, are generally available as well. In fact, our shelters in Carlsbad and Bonita often have livestock such as pigs, goats and chickens available.

Puppies and kittens are most prevalent in the spring and summer months, but do show up in the shelters year round. Adoption fees are $58 for cats and kittens, $69 for dogs and puppies, and $25 for rabbits. (Special adoption fees are available for animals seven years of age or older as well as for senior citizens/disabled persons.) The adoption fee includes vaccinations, spay or neutering, medical and behavior evaluation, identification micro-chipping and, for dogs residing in the Department’s service area, a one-year free license.

Spaying & Neutering

Spaying or neutering your pets (companion animals) insures that they will not breed more young animals who might be heading to the shelter, compounding an already desperate problem of homeless pets. All Dogs and Cats adopted from the San Diego County Animal Shelters will be spayed or neutered PRIOR to you being able to take them home. If the animal you are interested in is not yet spayed or neutered, plan on a one day delay so they can have their surgery. This one day delay could prevent the creation of hundreds of homeless pets over time. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
