Who We Are

FOCAS is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded to promote a strong adoption program for the lost and abandoned dogs and cats at the San Diego County public animal shelters.

Foster Opportunities

FOCAS currently has an urgent need for fosters for the shelter animals we exit out. We have a need for a variety of fosters including; medical, behavior, temporary, short and long term. We will provide you with the training you need to help out these cats or dogs. The FOCAS Medical Fund will pay for necessary veterinary care; and once a cat or dog that is ill or injured is no longer in need of treatment, they are ready to be adopted into their permanent home. The more foster homes we have the larger impact we can make, and ultimately save more lives. Please contact us today if you can open up your heart and home to an animal in need.

Volunteer Opportunities

DO YOU LOVE PETS? FOCAS volunteers are needed for adoption events in Balboa Park each month to increase the number of dogs adopted from our County Animal Shelters. Those of you that love cats can help us care for and socialize cats located in PETsMART Luv-A-Pet Centers in Pt. Loma and Encinitas, and also at our adoption center at Animal Medical Center in El Cajon. Volunteers are also trained to help the public select animals for adoption and to counsel and educate while doing so. Indeed, public education is one of the highest priorities of FOCAS.

FOCAS' NEW AMC HOUSE also needs volunteers to help care for the dogs and cats at our medical and special care center in El Cajon. Help take care of mother cats and kittens, dogs and cats needing medical treatment, isolation or simply some special care. The dogs and cats need care, cleaning, walks and socializing every day! Many shifts are available. It's a fun and worthwhile project to do with a friend. Call us today!

TRANSPORTATION volunteers are also needed to take dogs and cats to and from vet visits, to adoption events and more. It's a small commitment of time to help us with a critical activity on behalf of the rescued cats and dogs.

Those who prefer a less physical role may wish to become involved in writing, publishing, special events, telephoning, or mailing activities. Artists, photographers, and those with computer skills are invaluable for our vital advertising efforts.Opportunities are only as limited as your imagination.

Please call 619-788-7880 for more information on volunteering or if you can open your heart and home to a foster pet. We need you now more than ever!

Special Cat of the Week: Leela

Leela Leela is a sweet kitty who has had a rough start! She would prefer to be the only kitty in your home so that she can shower you with love. Leela loves to be loved and will greet you at the door when you come home to give you all the affection you need! Do you think she's right for you? If you'd enjoy a cat who's quiet, undemanding, and affectionate, then Leela's the girl for you. She recently saved a life herself by donating blood to another kitty that desperately needed a transfusion. For more information on Leela, please call 619-579-7172 or, if you'd like to meet Leela, you can make an appointment to come down to meet her at our El Cajon FOCAS cattery.

Special Dog of the Week: James

James James is one special little guy. He had a tough start and because of his timidness, he will need a quiet, adult only (no children under 18) home where he can continue to thrive. He LOVES going on long walks or jogs and is enjoying the condo life. He has doggie friends but would like to have your undivided attention at home. James knows sit and is housetrained and sleeps in his crate all night. And while he is entertained with a rousing game of fetch he is also content to just sit with you and relax. He is the consummate ego boost at the end of the day. His enthusiastic greeting will make all the bad days melt away. Do you have what it takes to give James the home he deserves? If so, please call Cyndi at 619-750-7755.
