The Ruby Refuge

Our Adoptable Pet List

Who We Are

Did you know the #1 reason dogs are turned into shelters is behavioral problems?

At The Ruby Refuge we identify & solve these problems so you don’t inherit them.

Our mission is to improve the success ratio of re-homing unwanted pets by more productively bridging the gap between rescuing an animal & placing him or her in a new, permanent home. We provide rescued animals who are healthy & well adapted to a home setting, including potty training & much more.

We accomplish this goal by providing a minimum four weeks of training & observation of each rescued animal by an experienced professional trainer, specializing in positive methods. The animal lives in the home, as a member of the family, aiding in the transition from a shelter life to a real home.

We rescue & adopt out one animal at a time...except for the occasional litter of unweaned puppies!

As of now we are limited to dogs only, but home to expand in the future.

Refuge Updates

3-10-07:Nope, that striking Great Dane pup above is NOT available for adoption, that's our unofficial "spokes-dog", Jack! The Ruby Refuge does not currently have any dogs available for adoption, because we have moved! We are setting up shop in the Salt Lake valley, surrounded by big sky & the breathtaking Wasatch Mountains! We will be starting up rescue again, (with some very exciting things in the works!), just as soon as we can get settled in. Keep checking back for updates!

3-10-07:
Take a look below at this video made by one of our adopters, of her "ruby in the rough": a very special German Shepherd Dog named Spirit. The Ruby Refuge rescued Spirit from euthanazia at a So Cal shelter in March of 2004. After much planning, Spirit was transported to North Carolina, where her forever home anxiously awaited her arrival. She's been livin' the good life ever since!

3-2-07: Great news, Chloe has found her forever home!!
2-8-07:Chloe is the last of a litter of Labrador mix puppies available for adoption & is almost ten weeks old. Her mother is a purebred black Lab, her father is unknown. -She sure looks like a Lab puppy & has the temperment of one too!

Chloe is outgoing & friendly, socialized with other dogs as well as a cat. She is already housebroken & learning basic commands. Her foster family just adores her!

12-29-06: One of our shiniest "rubies", a Jack Russell Terrier named Anna, joined those who have gone before her at the Rainbow Bridge in the early morning hours of 12-22-06. Anna was turned in to our rescue by a local backyard breeder only two months ago. She was born with Inherited Cerebellar Ataxia & had lived outside with many unaffected JRTs for the first year of her life. Only two months later, her disease became too much for her body to bear.

Below is a video of Anna's first day with us:

Anna was pregnant with three pups when she arrived, (we had no idea). Unfortunately the pregnancy had to be terminated & Anna was spayed just over a month ago. There was little chance she’d be able to deliver naturally & the pups would likely have inherited the disease. We chose a bad option over an even worse one. She recovered very quickly from the surgery & finally gained all of the weight she needed. (She was very thin upon arrival.)

Anna was an absolute delight to be around. She was glued to my side from the moment we laid eyes on each other & we promptly fell in love. She made an impression on everyone she met & could make you smile even on your darkest day. Everyone was immediately struck by her sweet & loving nature, even strangers on the street. In her short time with us Anna learned what bones, treats & meals all to herself were, she learned how to play with toys, (imagine, a JRT who didn’t know what a ball was!) & she adopted one of my Border Terriers as her own. She potty trained herself on the first day, despite having NEVER been in a house before. I’ve never seen another creature happier than at bedtime, when I would pick her up & put her into bed. She’d crawl right under the covers next to me, lick my face & roll around in ecstasy. Then she’d fall fast asleep by my side, only to awaken when I did the next morning.

We are still grieving for our sudden loss. She brought so much light with her wherever she went & our home just isn’t the same without her. She will be missed by our family & everyone else who was lucky enough to spend time with her. We will never forget our little “Anna-banana”.

Anna will always live on in our hearts & we find peace knowing she is no longer suffering. I know she’ll be waiting for us with Walter & Ruby at the bridge, with a healthy body & a big grin on her face. Thanks to everyone who cared about Anna & helped us to help her by educating us about this disease, giving us advice on some very difficult decisions, donating for her surgery & giving us a shoulder to cry on. Special thanks to the Jack Russell Terrier Club of California and in particular to Cheryl Costello, President of the South Coast Jack Russell Terrier Club.

11-27-06: The Ruby Refuge & Petbond.com teamed up after Hurricane Katrina left the Gulf Coast in shambles. We assisted in animal rescue efforts at Winn Dixie in New Orleans proper, Pearl River County Humane Society & the Humane Society of Southern Mississippi.

We also brought two dogs back to Los Angeles with us, Sunny & Jasmine. Sunny was a severely traumatized pup & Jasmine was pregnant! Jasmine gave birth to six healthy pups on the eve of Halloween 2005, three girls & three boys. They all went to their forever homes on New Year's Day, even mama! Sunny went to her forever home shortly thereafter. Everyone is doing great!!

Due to time restrictions on youtube we have split our video up into two parts. The first video is the longer of the two, it highlights our trip & the fostering of Sunny, Jasmine & the pups. The second video is the "Happy Ending" video with pics from adoption day & family photos sent to us over the last year. Thanks to everyone who helped out & made our trip possible! We won't ever forget the things we saw.
