"At
this time of year, we stop to celebrate our good fortune, family and friends.
It is a time to be thankful for what we have...to share with good friends
and family...both "people" and "critter" family. We at FFF want to take
this time to extend our best wishes to you, our supporters and friends,
and our sincere thanks for your support and friendship throughout the year.
Without the support and care of our wonderful and dedicated veterinarians, Mike Evans, Pat Wehren and their staff
at Animal Care Clinic, the spay/neuter program at Wellpet, the supportive
staff at Pet Food Express in Concord, and the numerous other community businesses
that keep our adoption van running, Adair Automotive, & Driving Specialists,
and our graphics bright and
advertising up to date, California Signs and Graphics, we would not be where
we are today. A very special thanks this year to Caroline Allsbrook and her pet-friendly staff at the John Muir Best Western Inn in Martinez for making a welcoming home during our long haitus from our home. Sally, P. S. Petunia sends her "purrs" and wishes, too. |

FRIENDS OF THE FORMERLY FRIENDLESS is proud and excited to be a founding member of the new S.O.C.K. FIP research project. S.O.C. K. is the acronym for Save Our Cats and Kittens. SOCKFIP is a group of cat-lovers, breeders, rescuers, shelters and vets working together to generate essential funding for FIP research at the UC Davis Center for Companion Animal Health. Virtually 100% fatal, FIP strikes 1 in 100 of all cats. We know that most cats acquire the FIP virus early in life, though actual disease signs may not occur until weeks, months or even years later. Right now, there's no prevention and no cure for FIP. It's time to change all that - and it can be done! Through the very exciting and promising work at UC Davis, we hope to learn how to prevent FIP or find suitable treatments, and spare future generations of cats and cat-lovers this nightmare. Because very little government funding is available for companion animal studies, we are relying on the vast community of cat-lovers to help. SUPPORT FIP RESEARCH AND SOCK IT TO FIP!

If you suspect that an animal in your neighborhood has been abandoned, please do not wait for someone else to do it, report it to our local Animal Services Department at 925 335-8300. You can get your bumper sticker at our adoption site at Pet Food Express in Concord. Please help us spread the word!

...is an emergency foster program for needy cats
...working in cooperation with community rescue groups and Animal Services Departments.
A new phase of the Short on Luck Program was launched in January of 2004. The
Safe Place component of the S. O. L. is being developed to provide a temporarily
safe place for cats that are caught up in a domestic violence situation and/or
at risk of violence from their environment. The concept is to provide a temporary
sanctuary through a network of emergency foster homes.
We hope to work cooperatively with local law enforcement, Animal Services and
battered women's organizations. If you would like to participate in this new
and unique S.O.L. program, please contact Sally

SALLY AND PETUNIA
Sally is pictured at left with her cat, Petunia.
Petunia helps with humane education in schools and
serves as a therapy kitty at Alzheimer's homes.
Petunia is also an official staff member, holding the title of cat liaison.
A MESSAGE FROM SALLY AND PETUNIA
Friends of the Formerly Friendless is authorized to pull cats from the Martinez
shelter, which we often do when a cat is scheduled to be euthanized the next
day and we can find a foster for it.
We are looking for caring, competent and loving people to help save these animal
victims of our streets from certain euthanasia. We need people to foster these
animals while we bring them back to good health, or to socialize them. We take
care of the medical and food costs. You supply the TLC and commitment until
they can be adopted.
We are in particular need of people who are patient and gentle with our youngest
of feral kittens. Also, we are interested in someone to help us provide for
the aged cats, alone and frightened, who have been dumped and abandoned by their
families to be euthanized in our public shelters.
If you can help or know someone who can, please contact Sally.
We look forward to seeing you. Have a purr-r-r-rfect day!

A special thanks to Bill Welch for his continued support with our Santa photo. We want to sincerely thank our web-tenders, Airtight Internet
Services, managing our FFF site and Sean Kleen who is managing our
petfinder.com and virtual pet adoptions site. Without their invaluable help...this
screen would be blank ...literally!
It
is also that time of year for me to ponder how far FFF has come from hand-lettered
poster signs, portable tables and folding cages, hand-drawn graphics and
initially, no web presence at all! With the help of dedicated people who
shared my vision, FFF evolved into a community resource and all of those
who helped it happen should take pride in knowing their contribution made
a difference. Last, but not least,
a sincere thanks to all of our loyal supporters, fosters, and adopters who,
year after year, support us in our adoption and fundraising efforts. Thanks,
Cathy, Kim, Karin & Bret, Kathie, Claudia, Paula, Sheila, Fran, Trish, Sue, Terry, Elaine,
Valerie and those who regularly visit us to lend moral support and share
their love with our foster kitties at Sunday adoptions.
A
special thanks to Gary Bogue for helping us get our message to the community
and always being there to help us with an animal(s) in need of a loving
home. Finally, to my long suffering husband, Charlie, AKA Santa, for sharing
his life and home with me and a myriad of kitties coming and going, a heartfelt
purr and thank you.
