The Oakland Animal Services is a division of the Oakland Police
Department. Oakland Animal Services is responsible for the welfare of
animals in Oakland. The Division handles nearly 6000 animals per year,
including stray, surrendered, abused, and neglected animals.

Take the I-880 South Fruitvale Ave. exit
Make the first left onto Del Monte (under the freeway towards the
shopping center)
Turn left at the stop sign
Right at the next stop sign (29th Ave.)
The Shelter is left at the stop light.
From the South (I-880 North):
Take the I-880 North 29th Ave./ Fruitvale Ave. exit

SCHEDULE TRAINING WITH A MENTOR
How to Become an Official OAS Volunteer:
Requirements to be a Volunteer
- STEP #1: Sign up and attend a volunteer
orientation (approx. 1 hour). All volunteer orientations are
held at the Oakland Animal Shelter at 1101 29th Ave. You must be 18
years or over to attend.
- STEP #2: Complete Online Training (approx. 2
hours). Go to www.4act.com.
You will get your login/password at the volunteer orientation. Complete
“Basics of Volunteering” and the animal section. You must pass the
quizzes with 85% or better.
- STEP #3: “Hands-On Basics of Volunteering”
(1- 2 hours): Schedule time with a mentor. Note about the Scheduling
System: When you log in, make sure to check all three boxes on the left
- to send confirmations and reminders from professionals (the Oakland
Animal Shelter).
- STEP #4: Hands-On Dog Training, Cat
Training or Rabbit
Training (at least 2 hours): If you miss two or more training
appointments with a mentor without canceling or you cancel three or
more appointments, you will be removed from the list and will not be
able to schedule any appointments.
- Step #5: Hands-On Practice (at least 1 hour).
This step is required for individuals training to be dog volunteers. If
you are training to be a cat or rabbit volunteer, you will find out
from your mentor in Step #4 if you should sign up for “Practice”. You
can sign up for “practice” as many times as you would like until you
feel comfortable working on your own. To sign up go to: Dog Practice, Cat Practice or Rabbit Practice.
- STEP #6: Become an Official Volunteer (appox.
30 min):
When you have completed your training, you are ready to meet with Megan
to discuss making you Official. You can either find Megan at the

hot water bottle, starter food, etc)

Requirements to Adopt:
To adopt an animal from Oakland Animal Services, you must:
- Be 18 years of age or older with a valid
California driver’s license or other acceptable identification;
- Visit with the dog or cat or rabbit you plan to
adopt. Adopters should bring all the human members of their household
to meet their new companion. Please do not bring any of your other pets
unless you have arranged this ahead of time. You can make an
appointment with our dog trainer, Gary Maria, 510-535-4883, to
introduce your dog(s) to a dog that you are interested in adopting.
And, in the case of rabbits, you may schedule with one of our rabbit
volunteers to help with “bunny bonding” if you would like to find a
playmate for your current rabbit;
- For dogs, you must show proof of home ownership
or permission to have a dog from your landlord;
- Successfully complete the adoption
questionnaire;
- Never have had any cruelty convictions, animal
control violations or broken any adoption contracts in the past;
- Pay the adoption fees by cash or credit card.
We do not accept personal checks.
- Pay the adoption fee the same day as the
adoption. We do not place any holds on any animals;
- Agree to a home inspection if the dog is a
pitbull or rottweiler or any other large breed dog or dog that that has
been identified to need additional attention;
- If you are adopting a dog, you should know
these laws and regulations: Dogs in Oakland.
- Pick up your new animals at the East Bay SPCA
Clinic or Noble Veterinary Clinic if the animal has not been
spayed/neutered already.
- Agree to and sign the “Statement of Buyer” (see
below).
Statement of Buyer:
I (we) hereby acknowledge receipt from you of the animal
______________________ (animal control number). I (we) understand that
the Oakland Animal Services makes NO WARRANTY in regard to the animal’s
ownership, condition, disposition, past behavior and health and that
you can only give such information as noted on the reverse side of this
form. I (we) agree that the City of Oakland and/or its officers and/or
employees shall not be liable, answerable, or accountable in any manner
for the injury to any person or damage to property or loss of use
thereof caused by said officers and employees, from any suits, claims,
or actions brought by any person or persons for or on account of any
bodily injuries, disease, illness or damage caused by said animal.
