El Dorado Co. Animal Services - S. Lake Tahoe

Our Pet List

News

Please come visit our beautiful new shelter and see our cat condos and enhanced dog kennels.

With our new building, we hope to expand our team of volunteers. Volunteers walk the dogs, play with the cats, and help with the adoption process. Volunteers are critical to adoptions, because interacting with the pets keeps them in a calmer state, making them more adoptable. Plus, our shelter is in a very beautiful setting! Please call the shelter to obtain a volunteer application and schedule an orientation.

Also, we are always in need of volunteers willing to provide short-term foster homes for those little ones who come in with no mom or are just too tiny for adoption. Please inquire about becoming a foster family.

Who We Are

El Dorado County Animal Services provides temporary housing for animals who have lost their owners. We also take in animals from owners who can no longer keep them based on individual circumstances. Our ability to do this depends on space availability and a fee is charged. Animals that pass a behavior assessment are available to the public for adoption.

The South Lake Tahoe shelter provides services to the city of South Lake Tahoe, Alpine County and unincorporated El Dorado County at the Lake Tahoe Basin.

We respond to calls regarding dogs running loose, strays and animals whose owners cannot be located.

We provide quarantine facilities for animals who are involved in bite situations and must be closely monitored due to expired or no rabies vaccine history. Animals with current vaccines are quarantined at home and visited by an Animal Control officer during quarantine to check on the health of the animal.

Adopting a friend

Interested in adopting one of our animals? Adoption is a simple process. Adopters can fill out an application at the shelter. Requirements: Own your own home or have landlord approval for an animal; have a fenced yard or other approved method of confinement (if adopting a dog). If you currently own dogs they must be current on rabies vaccinations and El Dorado County license. Adoption fees for dog are $120.00 plus license. Cat adoption fees are $80.00.
