Pet Orphans of Southern California is one of the oldest, active humane organization in Los Angeles with a private shelter. Founded in 1973, this non-profit rescue group is dedicated to the advancement of companion animal welfare. We are committed to decreasing the number of animals euthanized annually in city and county shelters through the implementation of our rescue, adoption and education programs. At our shelter facility located in Van Nuys, California, an average of 60 dogs and 30 cats are housed until they can be placed with new guardians. Over the last 30 years, Pet Orphans has facilitated thousands of dog and cat adoptions.
Pet Orphans serves homeless companion animals in Los Angeles County, and the majority of the pets in our facility have been transferred from city and county shelters. Our orphans are provided with the highest quality care, including any necessary medical treatment and they are taught basic obedience commands until a loving, permanent home is found for them.
Adopting a Friend
Our animals are shown for adoption during the foloowing hours: Closed Monday, Open Tuesday through Friday 11 am to 4 pm, Open Saturday and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. We take every precaution available to ensure that our pet orphans will lead happy and safe lives after they leave us. Our adoption process and policies, therefore, are thorough, as they are designed to ensure that our orphans' new homes are secure, loving and permanent. All applicants are carefully screened; please go to our website at www.petorphans.org/howtoadopt to read about the process.
If you see an orphan on Pet Finder that you are interested in and want to come visit, please call us first (818-901-0190, x103) to make sure he or she is still available. We update this site often, but sometimes orphans find homes before we can update our list You can also check out website at www.petorphans.org as this site is most likely to be the most up to date.!
Volunteering and Donations
The Pet Orphans volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. These committed individuals contribute their time and energy to our dogs and cats, helping to keep them active, happy and healthy. Our volunteers assist with office services, counseling potential adopters, greeting visitors, animal bathing and grooming, dog walking, cat socializing and dispensing lots of "TLC." All volunteers attend an orientation session and are given basic training in the areas they wish to become involved in.
Good Samaritan: Last year Pet Orphans established a Special Medical Services Program to provide extensive medical treatment to rehabilitate sick, injured or traumatized animals with a goal of making them healthy and eligible for adoption. Donors contributing $200.00 receive a "thank you" note and a tax receipt.
