Our shelter is currently in need of scoop able litter and Amazon Gift cards for flea treatments and new kennel buckets!

Be a responsible pet owner! Spay and neuter your pet. Remember pet overpopulation isn’t the end of the world, UNLESS you are a puppy or a kitten.

Adopting A Friend

We have dogs/puppies, cats in need of permanent, loving homes. There is an adoption application to fill out, and upon approval, there will be an adoption contract/agreement to be completed. You must present a valid picture ID in order to adopt.

Please note that the shelter has the right to refuse adoption to potential adopters.

The adoption fees are $120 for puppies, $100 for adult dogs (over 1 yr); cats/kittens are $70. (Cash Only Please) Special breeds/purebreds may be higher. This adoption fee includes the spay/neuter and FVRCP>= vaccinations.

Policy for Intake of Displaced Pets

  • Due to the economy and our pet overpopulation, we currently have limited or no space available for displaced pets.
  • We do not pick up stray/abandoned/injured animals as we have no officer trained for this duty. Please call Animal Control.
  • Pets do better in foster homes, as opposed to a shelter environment, so if at all possible, please try to keep your pet as long as you can or seek the help of family or friends to foster the pet while we assist you with finding a permanent, loving home. Come fill out a card for available displaced pets.
  • DO NOT, under any circumstance, just “let your pet go” in hopes someone will take them in. Too many times this has ended in tragedy for that loving, trusting family member.
  • Please make every possible effort to have the pet spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations prior to trying to adopt them out. We offer low cost FVRCP vaccinations (no rabies) to owners.
  • It is IMPORTANT that you call the shelter to check for space availability PRIOR to bringing any pet in. There is an owner surrender fee.

Who We Are

The Merced SPCA strives to promote the prevention of animal cruelty within Merced County, to educate the public with regards to the benefits of spaying and neutering household pets, and to encourage the responsible adoption of animals into loving and permanent homes.

A non- profit organization since 1967, the Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) operates a no-kill shelter with the help of kind and dedicated volunteers. Funding for the Merced SPCA is obtained through the generous donations received from various individuals, organizations, corporations and businesses and new memberships. The Merced SPCA appreciates all the help it receives from volunteers, donors, and members.

We are a no-kill shelter…and, with your generous support, we will be here until they all have a home!
