Pet of the Month

Our pet of the month introduces themself...ALLIE (ID# A010614) & RONNIE (ID# A010613)

Picture of Allie & Ronnie a pair of Dwarf mix rabbits Picture of Allie & Ronnie a pair of Dwarf mix rabbits
ALLI (ID# A010614) is a gorgeous spayed female Dwarf and American Sable mix rabbit with dark chocolate ears, nose, feet, and tail. RONNIE (ID# A010613) is a neutered male, Dwarf mix. They were about 8 weeks old when they arrived on June 23, 2008. They are a wonderful bonded pair of siblings and will need to be adopted together. Alli is the more inquisitive of the pair. She has to check out everything new in her environment. Alli doesn't mind being petted sometimes, but she prefers exploring. Ronnie is very sweet and doesn't mind a few pets. He is a little more mellow and tends to follow Alli. Both rabbits have excellent litter box habits and will keep you entertained just watching them! They make a perfect pair of house rabbits.

Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM or Sunday Noon to 3:00 PM are the ONLY times you can sit and interact with our rabbits while they play. These are also the only days our rabbit experts are available at the shelter to answer any question you may have, or you may email your questions directly to a rabbit expert at rabbits@petprojectfoundation.org. We would love to hear from you and are happy to help.

Bonded rabbits are the ultimate pet for the home. They keep each other company during the day while you are at work, they groom each other, especially their eyes and ears so they have less of a need for vet care in those areas, and they are so much more happy and content. Each rabbit has their own unique personality and with gentle care and love from you, they can also bond with you!

Our experience is when a single rabbit is adopted, after a while, the owner may see their beloved bunny showing some signs of being sad or lonely because they want a mate to snuggle and care for when you are not around. Although there are some rabbits that will only bond with humans, rejecting a bond with another rabbit. You are fortunate if you adopt from our shelter because our bonding experts can evaluate and try different rabbits in a controlled bonding process to see if your spayed or neutered single bunny accepts another buddy from our shelter.

Rabbits make excellent pets. They are intelligent, social animals capable of forming lifelong bonds with their human companions. Whether housed in a small apartment or a spacious home, the quiet well-mannered house rabbit will be a welcome addition. Their playful antics will warm your heart for years to come. A well cared for house rabbit has a lifespan of seven to ten years or longer.

Rabbit adoptions are $45 each and include the House Rabbit Handbook, "New Owner" folder, 1-free (from list) Veterinary basic health examination within 5 days of adoption, and gets a microchip. You will also have a team of experienced rabbit volunteers to answer any questions you may have 7-days a week by emailing rabbits@petprojectfoundation.org. We will respond by email or if you leave your phone number we can talk.

Please review both of these very informative rabbit intro videos before you adopt: (Sorry, this first video has a very short advertisement before the video, but it is worth the wait!)

If you're looking for a friend for your rabbit, we're happy to help!

To see if one of our rabbits might be a buddy for your bunny:
1) Have your rabbit altered.
2) Contact the shelter (949-492-1617) and let them know you're interested in a rabbit bonding or email a rabbit volunteer directly at rabbits@petprojectfoundation.org
3) If you are considering a particular rabbit, ask if the rabbit has been altered. (Both rabbits must be fixed before any bonding attempt.)
4) Leave your name and number and the shelter staff will put you in touch with the bonding specialist.
5) The bonding specialist will call you and set up an appointment for bonding. All rabbit introductions must be done by the bonding specialist, and are usually done on weekends.

OUR DOG TRAINING PHILOSOPHY

If you adopted (or will adopt) your dog from our Shelter, know that we provide free phone consultations regarding dog behavior or care.

'GENTLE LEADER' HARNESSES for Dogs are a Great Alternative!!!

Our shelter is a strong believer in 'gentle leader' harnesses. Trainers and owners who continue to use prong or choke-chain-type collars have just not been exposed to the best and latest information. In fact, prong-type collars are outlawed in some European countries.

Gentle leaders and positive training ultimately work best, in addition to being the most humane. Prong and choke-type collars might work in the short-term, but they only serve to increase aggression in assertive dogs, and produces a back-lash effect in the long-term. They can also produce severe trauma in shy dogs. Many of the dog owners we've heard from can attest to the fact that even in best-case scenarios where prong or choke collars work initially, there's a tendency for dogs to just pull harder later as they become desensitized to them.

We recommend the gentle leader harness using positive reinforcement, and small, healthy training treats, such as Solid Gold Tiny Tots treats, or any of the soft or freeze-dried liver treats. We know that positive feedback and treats are primary motivators that continue to work in the long-term, without harm to the pet or owner.

DONATIONS

We are a volunteer group that devotes our time to the care and welfare of the animals at our shelter. We rely on the generosity of the public and our community to provide housing, food, medical care, training and anything else the animals of our shelter require. Along with monetary donations, we are always in need of (used are just fine!) blankets, towels, and sheets---(sheets are used to lay on the ground to hop rabbits). Please email us for more information or visit our website to give a donation online.

WHO WE ARE

Lost and abandoned animals have a second chance at a good life? thanks to the Pet Project Foundation and the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter. The mission of the Pet Project Foundation is to enhance the quality of life of all companion animals in a pro-humane manner through compassion, responsibility, education and service. Nowhere is this mission better exemplified than through our ongoing support of the shelter. This special shelter provides food, housing, exercise, medical care, and love for homeless animals until they are reunited with their owners or permanent, loving homes are found.

Over 28,000 animals have come through our shelter where they are safely housed and loved until permanent homes can be found. Our pro-humane philosophy ensures that no adoptable animal will ever be euthanized, regardless of how long it takes to find them a new home. This philosophy comes at a price, however. The cities of San Clemente and Dana Point provide funds and manpower for the basic operation of the shelter. However, it is through both the dollars and volunteer-man-hours donated by the Pet Project Foundation that we?re able to preserve our pro-humane approach.

In addition to supplying funding for all food and medical care at the shelter, PPF also has contributed dollars for retractable awnings over the dog kennels, a new industrial laundry room, addition of a special area for rabbits (the Rabbitat), upgrades to the medical treatment room, and improvements to the cat room. PPF also contributes a significant portion of the funding for the kennel attendants' salaries, and underwrites a program for residents of San Clemente and Dana Point whereby pet owners can be reimbursed for a portion of the cost of having their dogs, cats or rabbits spayed or neutered. PPF also recently funded the hiring of a full-time trainer for our shelter dogs to ensure each dog receives positive reinforcement training through treat and praise prior to adoption.

Pet Project Foundation volunteers log over 26,000 hours of service at the shelter each year. These dedicated volunteers walk dogs, calm the fears of anxious cats, feed hungry rabbits, and perform a host of administrative tasks - along with dozens of other activities needed to help keep the shelter in operation. It is through the help of these volunteers and the generous support of residents and businesses in our communities that we can ensure the care and comfort of these animals.

Come visit the shelter that was voted "Best Place to Adopt a Pet" by Orange Coast Magazine. See for yourself the wonderful care these homeless animals receive and just maybe you'll find a new friend and companion in the process!

ADOPTING A FRIEND!!!

We are proud and honored to be voted "BEST PLACE TO ADOPT A PET" by Orange Coast Magazine!

FOSTER HOMES

We DESPERATELY NEED FOSTER HOMES FOR KITTENS and can you please help us adopt out our cats and kittens!

We need:!
1. Responsible homes with the time to socialize and ability to transport to vets' offices and to the shelter as required;
2. Preferably no children under 6-years in the home;
3. An area away from any other pets, such as an extra room or bathroom;
4. Fosters should live fairly close to the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter as they must use our vets, and be able to get to one of our vets quickly in an emergency situation;
5. This is a short term investment of time, sometimes around a week to 90 days, sometimes longer.

There are all levels of foster care:

1. You can specify whether you are home all the time and therefore could care for kittens without Moms.
2. If gone from home more than 4 hours at a time, you should only care for older kittens (6 weeks & older) or Mom cats with kittens.
3. Some may want to experience the "miracle of birth" and can sign up for a pregnant cat.

The volunteer group (Pet Project Foundation) pays for all food and vet expenses...all that foster moms have to provide is time, love, and transpiration as needed.

If you are interested, come to the Kitten Shower; contact Cindi Kane at the San Clemente-Dana Point Animal Shelter, 949-492-1617 or e-mail at kanec@san-clemente.org or call our foster coordinators, Carole Kuhn at 949-496-0814 or Nancy Gonzalez at 949-495-7866.
