Who We Are
Greater California German Shepherd Rescue began its operations in December 2007 and is a nonprofit public charity under IRS code 501(c)(3). It is an all-volunteer group serving the Greater Sacramento, Central San Joaquin Valley down to Merced, North Bay and occasionally parts of the East Bay, including area codes 209, 707, 916, parts of 530 and, to a lesser extent, area codes 510 and 925.
We are a small group of dedicated volunteers who rescue German Shepherd Dogs from life-threatening situations and find them permanent homes with qualified owners. We work cooperatively with animal shelters, professional trainers, and other rescue groups toward our common goals of saving dogs’ lives and educating the public about responsible pet ownership. Please contact us if you would like to help!
About German Shepherds
German Shepherds aren't for everyone. They're big, energetic dogs with long tails, and can clear a coffee table with one swipe. They have a lot of hair with a double coat, and that means they shed year round - and they shed a LOT. They're active, alert, assertive, noisy and mouthy. They take work - a LOT of work. They need socialization, leadership, exercise and a job, or they'll find their own amusements, usually by chewing, digging, barking or escaping. They tend to get territorial, possessive, and protective.
If you don't mind all that, if you understand and love the breed, and are willing to put the necessary work into one, you'll end up with a very intelligent, very devoted, and very responsible member of the family. There isn't a finer family dog or for all-around purposes than a good German Shepherd that is well-trained and well-socialized.
Adopting One of Our German Shepherds
Inside Pet Only
We require that our dogs be part of the family, and spend most of their time inside the home when their family is home. Dogs left outside too much become lonely, bored and frustrated, which leads to destructive behavior. Most of our dogs have come out of that situation, we want to put them into a better situation.
Adoption Fees
Our adoption fees are $300 for puppies 6 months and younger, $250 for adult dogs, and $100 for Special Needs dogs. Our adoption fees cover less than half of the average expenses for a dog, and we rely on tax-deductible donations to allow us to continue to save dogs.
Home Visit
We require a physical home visit before we place a dog into a new home, so we are limited to the areas our volunteers can cover. At this time, we are concentrating on the Greater Sacramento area, the Central San Joaquin Valley area from Sacramento to Merced, the North Bay, and in the East Bay to a lesser extent.
Please use email (see below) if you are outside these area codes: 209, 510, 530, 707, 916 and 925. We have a limited budget and would prefer to spend our money on the dogs instead of returning long-distance phone calls.
Out of State
Sorry, we don't adopt out of state. There are many worthy German Shepherds needing homes all over the country, please help save one in your area if you're not in ours.
Adoption Questionnaire
If you are interested in adopting one of our fine dogs, please fill out an Adoption Questionnaire (AQ) at: http://www.gcgsr.org/docs/AQ_GCGSR.pdf
Please fill out the AQ and fax or mail it in to the contact information listed below before contacting us about a specific dog. Completed and scanned AQs can be sent to the email contact below (quickest method). One of our Adoption Counselors will contact you shortly after we receive your AQ.
If you're planning to attend an Adoption Day, please bring a copy of your completed AQ with you. Thank you!
