Who We Are

The Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue is an independent, small, grass roots animal rescue group that was founded in October, 2005. The Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused, neglected and problematic horses and off track thoroughbreds as well as rescuing and rehabilitating stray and abandoned dogs in the Tijuana River Valley, on the U.S. side of the border. TRVAR began when I moved my horses (all rescues), and boarded them in South Bay. Immediately, upon my arrival, I discovered that the Tijuana River Valley, which in part consists of 2,500 acres known as the Tijuana Estuary, which is natural, protected and preserved wetland habitat, accessible and available only to pedestrians and equestrians, had unfortunately become a common place for people to dump and abandon dogs. Due to the fact that the Tijuana River Valley directly borders Mexico, many dogs come directly across the border from Tijuana. With the completion of the secondary border fence, the number of dogs coming across the border has greatly decreased. Despite the drop in number of strays, TRVAR is still active in the Tijuana River Valley and beyond, rescuing, rehabilitating and placing dogs from all backgrounds. Between my partner, Jesse Warner, and myself, to date, we have directly rescued and placed close to 70 dogs from the Tijuana River Valley and beyond. Currently, Jesse has primarily taken over the dog rescue portion of program, while I handle the horse issues. All of our dogs receive complete, comprehensive vet care from Dr. Kirk Feinberg at Governor Animal Clinic in San Diego. Our horses receive in-depth vet care from Kim Sergent of All County Equine, as well as a specialized tream of equine vets. The Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue, with the decrease of dogs, is currently primarily dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating abused, neglected and problematic horses, as well as specializing in off track thoroughbreds. Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue works to rehabilitate our equines, both physically and emotionally, and ultimately place them appropriately based on their physical abilities or limitations as well as their emotional needs. Each horse requires a specific type of specialized training and care. TRVAR works to give all our rescues independent attention to address each horses needs, body, mind and spirit. Although geared toward rehabilitation and adoption, Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue does provide permanent “retirement” for many horses. Sanctuary or permanent retirement options for horses is an area of incredible need. If you, or anyone you know, has space on their land and in their heart for a horse the needs permanent retirement, please let us know, you would be providing a much neeeded and appreciated service that would open up a position for another horse "in need" to come into the rescue! Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue was finalized as a 501(c) 3 Non-Profit Organization as of February, 2009. TRVAR is always working to expand our network of potential permanent homes as well as possible foster care. We hope to have our web site up and running within the next month or so. Tijuana River Valley Animal Rescue thanks you for your interest and support. Please feel free to give my name and phone number to anyone who may be interested in adopting, fostering, donating, or anyone who would like more information.
