Our Mission Statement

Happy Tails is a no-kill sanctuary that seeks to protect and improve the lives of animals in the Sacramento area by sheltering them and nurturing them, providing them with necessary medical care (including spaying and neutering), and educating the public about the joys and responsibilities of caring for these creatures whose lives have value.

What We Do and Who We Are

Happy Tails, Sacramento's first no-kill pet sanctuary, was founded in 1993 by volunteers committed to a common goal: To create a safe haven for abandoned and abused animals.

Our volunteers are working towards obtaining and operating a physical facility to serve as a true pet sanctuary. In addition, we are also focusing our efforts on promoting the availability of low- or no-cost spaying and neutering to help solve the Sacramento area's rampant pet overpopulation problem.

We rescue abandoned, abused, and homeless cats and dogs. The rescued animals are tested, vaccinated, altered, and microchipped before being placed in loving homes or relocated to controlled colonies where they are maintained in a safe, healthy environment. Volunteers visit our colonies at least once a day.

Happy Tails is operated entirely by volunteers and has no paid employees. Its major source of funding is monetary donations from generous benefactors. Other funding is obtained through adoption fees and volunteer-organized fund-raising events. Federal and state tax authorities and the United Way recognize Happy Tails as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation.

Volunteer Opportunities

Check our web site or call (916) 556-1155 to find out more about becoming a Happy Tails volunteer. There are many tasks to do, and we always need foster homes. (We provide the food, veterinary care, and supplies; you provide the TLC.)

Adopting a Friend

All Happy Tails animals are spayed or neutered before being placed for adoption. The are tested for infectious diseases, vaccinated, and are flea free. Our animals live in foster homes until they get adopted so we get to know what they like and don't like. All animals are microchipped before adoption.
