Who We Are

Friends In Deed Sheltie Rescue is a volunteer effort by dedicated individuals in the rescue community in British Columbia. The dogs in our rescue program generally are surrendered by owners who have had life changes that have forced them to give up the dogs. Very few of our dogs are from animal shelters.

Because our expenses exceed our income, we exist on discounts, adoption donations, fund raising and direct donations from adopters and benevolent individuals.

Adopting a Sheltie

If you want to be considered for one of our dogs, you must FIRST complete and return our adoption application. Our goal is to get the dogs into qualified (screened applications) homes that match them as soon as they are ready to go. Every extra day spent in a foster home complicates the transition for the dog. See below for details on adoption.

Baby Puppies: We rarely get puppies (up to 1 year) in rescue. We also do not give a pedigree, registration papers or a guarantee on puppies we place. If you want a Sheltie puppy with registration papers, family history, and a genetic health guarantee, please contact a reputable breeder.

Application: If you want to apply to adopt a dog, please ask for an application form and email it back. Many of our rescued dogs come from homes where they were the pets of elderly people. We try to place them in quiet homes that offer a comfort level they enjoy.

All of the dogs we handle are already spayed and neutered. We do not give registration papers with the dogs. Our adoptions include:
- initial health screening - behavioral evaluation; - fostering in a pet home environment; - house training if needed (adult dogs); - continuing support for the rest of the dog's life

Application: Please request an adoption application by email and then email or fax it back to us (fax: 250-992-2760).

Adoption Process: After we get your application, we will call or email you if we have a dog that might suit you. If it seems like a match, we will check your references and do a home check. A meeting with the dog follows. For some adopters, this process takes a week or two while others find a dog through other contacts before we get a match for them.

Rather than expecting each adopter to pay all that we have spent on each dog, the cost to adopt is based on the dog's age - younger dogs are more expensive than seniors. Our adoption fees are comparable to what you would be asked to donate for a dog at the animal shelter or SPCA plus a portion of our overall medical expenses (spays/neuters and medicals) that would be significantly more costly for you as a private individual. We take Canadian or U.S. dollars (at par) for our adoption fees.

Out-of-Province Adoptions: We have such a large province and so many potential adopters here that we rarely send our dogs to new homes outside of British Columbia. We may consider out-of-province adopters for SENIOR or SPECIAL NEEDS dogs. If you are outside BC and looking for a carefree youngster, please contact your local rescue or email us and we will put you in touch with a rescue group near you.

NO FREE DOGS! Adopting from rescue should not be seen as getting a bargain dog. What you save is given in the value of your commitment to working through any medical or behavioral issues that the dog could exhibit during the transition to your home.

After you've applied . . . Meet Our Dogs by Appointment!

We do not have an animal shelter, store or a kennel where dogs can be viewed. Instead we are a network of loving foster homes throughout BC that are coordinated by a central committee. After you have been tentatively matched with a dog, we arrange for you to meet the dog at its foster home. We want your immediate family (mom, dad, kids) to come meet the dog. Then we can further evaluate whether this is a match.
