Creature Comforts Pet Rescue
Our Featured Pet...
Owning exotic animals may seem glamorous, but the truth of the matter is, caring for them is not an easy task. Did you know that little loonie size red eared slider turtle you saw in the pet store can reach lengths of over a foot? How about that cute little caiman, who might grow to be 7 feet long, or more. That beautifully marked burmese python, has the potential to reach upwards of 16 feet. The cute little macaw baby can live to be over 100 years old, and has the intelligence of a 2 year old child. These are just a few examples of what you might not know about that neat little creature you saw in the pet store, or advertised in your local paper. Do you have the knowledge to make sure your pet has the proper care and attention? Not only in terms of diet, but socialization, stimulation, and enrichment, all of which are equally important to the creature's health and longevity. Without the proper knowledge, keeping an exotic animal could be detrimental to his or her health, and in some cases would be considered cruel. This is not to say they should not be kept in captivity, only that they should be kept by responsible, and knowledgeable owners. Without the proper people keeping, breeding, and studying these animals, many species would now be extinct. Any animal you welcome into your home will require a commitment for their lifetime, and should never be taken lightly. If you are considering adopting an animal, whether it's a cat, dog, snake, lizard, rodent, bird, ferret, or turtle, please make sure you know all about his or her captive care BEFORE you bring your new pet home.
***REMEMBER....this is the WORLD WIDE WEB....make use of it and DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!***

News
Red Eared Slider turtles are pretty, greenish colored turtles with small red stripes on their faces. These turtles are native to Indiana, south to the Gulf of Mexico.
RES are commonly sold in pet stores without mention of the size these creatures can reach, and to people who have no knowledge on the proper care needed to raise a healthy red eared slider.
Some common reasons people abandon these turtles include; size (we've seen up to 14"), smell (turtles have a very strong odor if not kept clean), sickness (without the proper care RES develop shell problems and respiratory ailments), and fear of Salmonella.
The problems with dumping RES or *any* animal into our lakes, parks and ponds is immense.
Red Eared Sliders' will become deathly ill over time, although some will live for years, suffering through our colder winters and eventually succumb to the problems facing it...
They develop such problems as Shell Rot, Soft Shell, Pneumonia and other fatal illnesses which need treatment in order for the turtle to survive.
These turtles also introduce new bacteria and sickness to the native population of animals, which is not good for the environment...the easiest way to save multiple lives is to research the idea of adopting a turtle before bringing one of those cute inch long babies.
The only *native* turtle species to the British Columbia region is the Western Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta belli) and this turtle is usually found in areas such as the Okanagan. The Western Painted can also be found in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
Other native Canadian turtles include Wood turtle, Spotted turtle, Midland Painted turtle, Eastern painted turtle, Eastern Spiny Softshell turtle, Common Map turtle, Common Musk turtle, Common Snapping turtle, and the Saskatchewan Blandings turtle. **Please not that the above mentioned species are NOT native to BC, and do your research if you intend to make one of them a part of your family.
