NEWS: URGENT REQUEST

After thirteen long and expensive years, SANS neighbour’s, Jackie and Robert Anderson have finally succeeded in driving SANS from the 13.2 acres of beautiful forested land that the shelter operates on. SANS has been given until September 1st to relocate and if this is not done, we will be found in Contempt of Court and will be ordered to pay a fine of $7500. There is also a great possibility that the RCMP will force their way onto the property to apprehend all of the rescued animals.

The dogs end up at SANS for a variety of reasons. Either they are viewed as being too old or too large. Some have been abused and have developed behaviour problems, while others have been abandoned due to health reasons or anonymously dropped off by puppy mill workers because they no longer generate sales due to developing genetic disorders from being over bred. Our concern is that all of the animals will be euthanized and we can’t allow this injustice to happen.

The 13.2 acres that the shelter is located on is up for sale and we have been aggressively advertising the property in order to comply with the court’s final decision. Although a few appointments for viewing the property have been booked, no one has submitted an offer to purchase.

SANS had to take an extremely high rate mortgage in order to purchase another property, which is unfortunately off the grid...meaning that it has no power source, landline telephone service or cell phone service, but it is remote and there will be no pressure from neighbours to have to contend with.

SANS is in great need of financial donations.

We are also hoping that someone would be willing to donate either a sturdy mobile home, construction trailer or insulated shipping trailer so that we can have a temporary area to house some of the dogs...the structure would be attached to one of the buildings on site. If you know someone who would be willing to donate such a structure, please pass this request on to him/her/them. Let them know that we can supply a tax receipt for the donation.

We are also looking for a donated 4WD automatic truck, van or station wagon. If you can help or know someone who can, please let us know

Who We Are

The West Coast Spay and Neuter Society — SANS — is a volunteer-run registered charity established in 1990. We are guided by two principals: all life is valuable, and we are responsible for improving the quality of life for all those in our care. We make no judgement on whose life is worth rescuing and whose life is not. The sick, elderly and homely are as precious to us as the healthy, young and attractive. We rescue, shelter and nurture animals, and we are a no-kill shelter.

The SANS shelter is located in Mission, B.C. SANS has placed hundreds of dogs and cats in loving homes. The dogs are "death row" dogs who were taken in from pounds where their number was up. We also rescue and care for abused dogs and puppy mill abandonments.

SANS receives no funding other than donations. All donations go directly to the animals. Administration costs are donated by the volunteers. We ensure that animals over six months of age are spayed or neutered and have their basic inoculations.

Ways to Support SANS

As a non-profit Society, we are very grateful for any assistance you may be able to provide us in maintaining our shelter. Your donation will help with the costs of spay and neutering all rescued animals as well help with housing, food, supplies and medical attention. All monetary donations are tax-deductible. On behalf of the animals at SANS, thank you. You make a difference!

Thanking Those Who Support SANS

We would like to acknowledge the outstanding generosity of FIRST MATE and SCIENCE DIET for their donations of food, which greatly assists us in keeping SANS animals happy and healthy.

Adopting a friend

Our dogs older than 6 months are spayed/neutered and tattooed, and all our dogs are innoculated. There is an adoption contract stating that you will care for the animal appropriately and that if you are unable to keep the animal you will return it to SANS. If you'd like to meet one of our dogs, please call us and leave a detailed message with your name and phone number. SANS rescues "deathrow" dogs who have been abandoned and/or abused. Only responsible humans please apply to adopt our dogs.

We're looking for homes for our dogs that will make them members of the family, living with the family in the home. Dogs are pack animals, they're highly social and it's cruel to separate them from the life of the family. There is a very small percentage of dogs who are better suited to outdoor life and who haven't adapted well to being indoor dogs. But even for these fellows, being part of the pack is extremely important to them. The outdoor home that they go to would have to be an exceptional home with the proper conditions, other dogs, and lots of outside activity with their people. They cannot just be chained in the back yard 24/7.

Many of our dogs are plain, older, big dogs. They also have the right to the same expectations that all dogs deserve: a loving pack whether human or canine, good quality and sufficient food, treats, and a comfy home with security. For people who are willing to provide this kind of environment for a hard-to-place good dog there will be no adoption fee.
