We are coming to the end of a long road. Pigpalooza! has made the choice to change to a sanctuary for the handicapped pigs who are currently here. They will live out their lives here and recieve the care they will need. Because of the great medical expenses we incur for these and all the other pigs that have come and gone from here, we can no longer accept additional pigs into our sanctuary. Over the years, we have placed nearly 250 guinea pigs, 100 pet rats, 10 ferrets, a couple dozen hamsters, and a Chinchilla.
We will occassionaly have pigs available for adoption as we receive calls from other shelters who need help or from pigs who have been adopted from us previously and then returned.
All the pigs that have been adopted from us, are still welcome to come back should something prevent their caretakers from providing their care.
Who We Are
It is our mission to educate and offer support and guidance to small pet guardians in order to improve the lives of small pets that have homes. Also, to rescue severely neglected or abused small critters, improve their health and behavior, and finally to place them into loving, permanent homes.
This is still our mission and we feel strongly about educating the public to be better pet caretakers.
Donating
Pigpalooza! is always in need of certain supplies in order to keep the sanctuary running properly and keeping those hungry piggies satisfied. Our wishlist is as follows:
Timothy Pellets from www.kmshayloft.com
Aspen, Carefresh or Pine Bedding
Paper towels
Large sturdy garbage bags
an assortment of fresh veggies
fresh Timothy Hay.
For fresh veggies, it is best to call ahead of time to find out what type to buy and to make sure there is room in the fridge!
We are also always in need of veterinary care. This is our biggest expense in operating Pigpalooza! If you are interested in contributing to our veterinary care fund, you are welcome to pay the vet directly in order to create a credit balance on our account. Our vet is Desert View Animal Hospital, (602)955-5500. Be sure to let them know you are making a donation to the account of Pigpalooza!
Where to Learn How to Properly Care for a Guinea Pig
It is not advised to take the advice offered by pet store employees as they often have outdated information and are not trained in proper care for guinea pigs and other small pets. This is usually evident by the conditions in which small pets are kept in the stores. In order to learn current methods of caring for guinea pigs, we urge you to read through the following websites. These sites are also recommended for people who already own guinea pigs. These sites offer wonderful ways to imrove the life of the piggies you already have!
Guinealynx.info - This site is FULL of very good and accurate info on how to care for your piggies. The main page contains a link titled "Raising A Healthy Guinea Pig" which is a great place to begin if you are considering a guinea pig as a new pet.
Cavyspirit.com - This site should be read from top to bottom as well. The creator has done a wonderful job to make her readers aware of all the current issues we face with trying to improve the lives of guinea pigs.
Cavycages.com - This is the place to look for housing your guinea pig. Pet store cages are not big enough for a guinea pig to live in and they are grossly overpriced. This site will teach you how to put your own cage together for approx $30. The cage is simple to put together, much easier to keep clean and provide enough space for your pigs to run around and maintain a healthy body. You can also ad levels with ramps and bridges to keep your piggie entertained. You will quickly see how much more of a stimulating environment these cages will offer for your piggies rather than the "prisons" they sell in pet stores and other like supply shops.
