First of all, we want to thank you for considering adoption through GSP Rescue Southwest. We will do everything we can to assist you in selecting a dog that's right for you. There are certain protocols that you will need to go through in order to adopt a dog through Rescue. First of all, you need to complete an adoption application questionnaire. After you have submitted that application, it will be reviewed and your references will be checked. In the meantime, you can visit our website at: www.gsprescuesouthwest.org and look through the dogs we have available at the moment. You can also go to www.petfinder.org and customize your search for GSP's available in your area. Next, we will need to set up an appointment with you for a home visit. At the home visit, a Rescue volunteer comes to your home and checks for things like adequate fencing for the dog, where the dog will live, where it will sleep, exercise area, discover how much interaction the dog will have with its new family and general dog-friendliness. (Adequate fencing is at least 5 foot chain-link, 2-3 inch metal or wooden (solid) fencing. Invisible fencing is not adequate because it does not protect the dog from in-coming animals/humans. Dogs should never be left unattended outdoors. While we do not discourage hunters from adopting a GSP, you must understand that these dogs are only adopted out as in-home companions. A dog from rescue can never be guaranteed to hunt. If the dog shows the ability to hunt, then that is considered to be an “extra”. After the home visit and approval, you and your Rescue Volunteer can decide if any of our available dogs will fit in with your home and family.. You can also expect a home visit or email/phone call from us shortly after you've adopted your new canine companion, just to make certain that everything is going alright. Our adoption donation amount is used to cover the cost of spaying/neutering, routine shots, heartworm check, micro-chipping, paying for shelter fees, and any other medical treatment the animal may have needed. Transportation is the responsibility of the adopter. In the adoption contract it clearly states that if for any reason you can no longer care for the dog at any time, it must be returned to GSP Rescue Southwest and not surrendered into a shelter. Again, transportation is the responsibility of the adopter. We will then re-home the dog and go through our adoption process again. We look forward to working with you in finding your new dog --and thank you for opening both your heart and home to a needy GSP! *******************
