SAVE THE CATS ARIZONA

OUR ADOPTABLE CATS

In Memory of our Maybelline

During the last two weeks of December 2010, 26 of our Riparian cats went missing, including our beloved Maybeliine. It has been reported that the cats went to the Humane Society. Most of the cats were feral or semi-feral. Feral cats are immediately put to sleep when taken to the Humane Society. We say a prayer for our cats who have died and pray for compassion, kindness, and humane treatment, for all cats whether tame or feral. We miss you Maybelline!

Recent Update

Two dozen cats were euthanized by the Audubon Society in concert with the Riparian Preserve. We have fought a successful battle to have the remaining 50 cats returned to our custody. We have a new location secured for our cats. We will start our own TNR colony at this site. All cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped, and healthy. All cats will initially be kept indoors in our new cat friendly environment. We can use donations to equip our facility with cat trees, condos, cat beds, and blankets. We also need wet and dry cat food. We hope to have financial contributions to help with spay/neuter costs. This is a new beginning for our cats. Our cats range from tame to feral and some of the cats will be adoptable.

Who We Are

We are a 501(c)3 cat rescue group. WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER AND DO NOT TAKE CATS FROM THE PUBLIC. We are a cat adoption agency only. Please do not call us to take in your cats. We typically receive about 3 calls a day from people wanting to "get rid of their cats." We have adopted 260 cats from a local preserve in the last few years, and we also adopted out 300 cats from Petco in 2007. We especially have a need for those wanting to adopt adult cats as they as mostly overlooked. On a personal note our advice to anyone thinking of starting a rescue is not to do it. The Arizona Humane Society has an annual budget of $20 miillion dollars. We are only 2 people and a handful of volunteers. We can't save all the cats. This rescue has taken a high price on our own lives. Many people are incredibly selfish and only want to adopt cute little kittens. Then when they become adults they return them or abandon them. We have dealt with all types of people in this rescue. Some are incredibly generous and caring people. But the buck always stops here and we are only two people who can't do it all. We ask please if you need help for a cat that you go to the Humane Society who is set up and equipped to help you.

Treatment of Feral Cats

Feral cats should not be brought to the Humane Society or Pound as they will be immediately put down. Also it costs between $75-96 to have a feral cat put down. (Unless you happen to be a municipality in which case it costs $10). Feral cats should be fixed and returned to the outdoors. Alley Cat Allies is a resource for feral cats. Also the spay neuter clinics offer inexpensive services. We recommend the Tempe Spay Neuter Clinic. They can be reached at 480-829-1002.The Animal Defense League also provides low cost services.

We Need Financial Help

We need financial contributions to help us and our cats in their new location. We are looking for spay/neuter angels to sponsor a cat at $50. This donation will pay for one cat to be fixed, vaccinated, and ear-tipped. Also we seek donors willing to give $20 a month to help us to care for our long term residents. Many thanks to recent generous financial contributions from our loyal volunteers Barbara Harris and Kathy Skinner. Also we thank Patricia Van Scoy, Helga Stafford, Sue Harrington, Terry Solano, and Steve Burke for their generosity. We appreciate all you do.

A Forever Home

Especially in our current economy, pet abandonment is a serious problem. Before you adopt that cute little kitten, think long and hard to see if you are prepared to go the distance with your new pet and provide them with a loving home for a lifetime. Pets provide many benefits including companionship, relieving stress, and preventing loneliness. We must be prepared to return to them the love, affection,, and life long devotion and commitment that they give to us.

Adopt an Adult Cat or Kitten Now

We have several cats available for adoption. For adoptions only call 480-830-9753. We DO NOT take cats from the public. We are always looking for someone to adopt our adult cats.. Most adult cats are at risk of euthanasia because adopters prefer young kittens. Adult cats also make good pets. And know that you are saving a life when you adopt an adult pet. When you adopt a pet remember that it is a lifetime commitment. In addition to adoptions we appreciate donations of food or money that help to keep our fees low. . We appreciate unopened, fresh, wet or dry food.. For donations or adoption information email us at savethecatsaz@aol.com.
