Sonny - is a one year old black male giant schnauzer who is cropped and docked. He was turned in to Animal Care and Control in Las Vegas for being mouthy. Being mouthy means he is trying to herd the people around him. We have had giants like that and train them to "get a toy" and they have the toy in their mouth and no problems. He has been neutered and is being fostered until he can come down to Phoenix to be evaluated. He will likely not be placed in a home with any young children. Junior High age or older since he will try to corral them. He will need a place with lots of exercise. We don't know if he has been around other dogs or how he is with anyone. This is just posted to let you know that he will be here. Pictures will be posted as we get them. This is a dog that will greatly benefit from an active life style. He will need lots of exercise and obedience training is a must. Sonny is doing well in his foster home. He played with a mini and a cocker and did well with them. The mini all but rolled him over and he had no problem with that. So he will get along with smaller dogs but we don't know about larger dogs yet. Update on Sonny. Sonny was picked up today and brought to Phoenix. He is a very typical young giant and not nearly as bad as was described to us. No one has so far seen any evidence of the mouthiness. He does need some work on learning to walk on a leash, but he bonds quickly with a human and wants to please. He is about 70 pounds right now and seems thin. He is most curious and does want to please. He sits when you want him to do something. He just needs to know that his humans are in charge and that seemed to happen quickly when he was picked up this afternoon. He was not anxious to come out of his crate, but once out, he quickly bonded with new people. He seems to get along with all the new dogs he has met. But he is young and still maturing. He has a fairly harsh coat and few furnishings which will make him awash and go giant, very easy to take care of. He will require regular grooming and brushing. Once he gets cleaned up we will post more pictures. Sonny might well do well with small children with the right family. But he has a lot of exuberance and energy that will need guidance. He will make a wonderful pet for someone. He is taking visitors at Deer Creek Animal Hospital, 3025 E. Rose Garden Lane, Phoenix AZ, 85050. Phone: 602 404 0066.

Charlie Bear - Rex is a 9 or 10 month old pepper salt giant schnauzer pup. He is from a backyard type breeder north of the Los Angeles area from what we are able to figure out so far. He was advertised on Craig's List and finally saved by rescue. Supposedly the lady who had him bought him because she felt sorry for him. Rex was being picked on by his litter mates. Rex is very timid and is going to take some time getting use to people. He does well with dogs and our dogs have been able to entice him out of his crate. He has a different coloring. He has been neutered and has been health checked. He is micro-chipped and had a blood panel done on him. He has just been here a couple of days, so as we learn more about him, we will post it here. He won't do well in a loud place or a place where lots of people are going in and out. He needs a very patient loving person to make him into a wonderful dog. If interested, please email and we will contact you about Rex. He does need another dog in the household. He is in a foster home learning to like people and other dogs.

Our Fun Day was held December 6, 2009 from 10a to 4p at Deer Creek Animal Hospital, 3025 E Rose Garden LN, Phoenix 85050. We had a grooming demo, agility demo, raffle items to raise money for our many rescues and food available. A great time was had by all!

Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue is a group of volunteers who are interested in educating people about giant schnauzers. We take in giant schnauzers who need a forever home. Our Mission is to rescue Giant Schnauzers in need, provide medical care, and foster these dogs until we find forever homes. We strive to find permanent, loving homes that are best suited to each dog. Each rescue dog receives a complete wellness check-up. This includes complete physical exam, general blood panel, screening for heartworms, Valley Fever, and Tick Fever. Appropriate treatments are administered as required. All dogs are micro-chipped and groomed. All dogs are spayed or neutered before placement. Foster homes evaluate temperament, training, and any behavior issues. Dogs receive training if needed and the dogs are matched with an appropriate home.

We raise money for our Valley of the Sun Giant Schnauzer Rescue on Ebay. You can go to http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZgiantschnauzerrescue to see what items we have listed to benefit rescue. We have a lot of unique art work that our members and supporters do to help us fund rescue. We also accept Paypal donations using the phxgsrescue@hotmail.com as our email address.

If we don't have a giant in rescue right now, we do work with other rescue groups around the country and will forward your application to the appropriate rescue group.

We are looking for foster homes for giant schnauzers. We need homes that are experienced with large dominant breeds. Several of these dogs do just fine with other dogs and others don't. They don't because they have been kenneled most of their lives and used for breeding purposes. They just need some time and some love and someone to act as alpha with them until they learn the ropes. Please contact us at phxgsrescue@hotmail.com if you might be interested or know someone who might be interested in fostering.

ADOPTING A FRIEND

We have an application that needs to be filled out and that can be done at www.vsgiantschnauzerrescue.org. We do home checks before adoptions are completed. Please visit our website to fill out an application to adopt a giant schnauzer. Our adoption fees range from $150 to $350. Most of our dogs are placed in the state of Arizona, but we will sometimes under special circumstances adopt elsewhere. If the giant needs to be transported, those costs will be up to the adopter. We do homechecks and will find someone in your area to do the homecheck and also to act as a backup for us in case the adoption should not work out.

Come Visit Us!

We are always looking for people who would like to be involved in rescue in some way. Whether it is helping us foster, transport, take the dogs to classes, work on fundraising, work on our website, and many other ways. If you are interested in helping in any way, please email us at phxgsrescue@hotmail.com. We would love to hear from you. Email is the best way to contact us at phxgsrescue@hotmail.com
