Chico was rescued from our local pound with his 7 brothers and sisters. All of his siblings have since found their forever homes as Chico just waits patiently for his. We learned early on that something was going on with our little chico. He just wasn't quite as active as his siblings. After several examinations, we learned that Chico had patent ductus
arteriousis.
The ductus arteriosus is a blood vessel that connects the two main arteries of the body - the aorta and the pulmonary artery. This blood vessel is normal in the fetus, but shortly after birth, it should close. When the ductus arteriosus remains open or patent after birth, this abnormal communication between the aorta and pulmonary artery passes extra volumes of blood into the lungs.
Patent ductus arteriosis (PDA) is a birth defect representing the second most common congenital heart defect of dogs. Approximately seven out of 1000 live birth puppies are affected.
Chico has his surgery set up for December 11, 2009. The Wiregrass Humane Society is a nonprofit organization and runs strictly on donations from the public. We are very thankful to Dr. Martin for doing this surgery at a discounted rate of $600.
If you can not give Chico a home but would still like to help, please call or email to find out how you can make a donation towards his treatment.

Adopting a friend
Adopting a friend for life is easy at the Wiregrass Humane Society. Once you have selected a pet for adoption you will fill out a short adoption application and meet with one of our adoption counselors and if approved we will go over our adoption contract and you go home with your new friend. Our adoption fee is $75.00 for both dogs and cats. This adoption fee covers the cost of spay/neuter surgery and the pet will be up-to-date on its shots, worming, rabies vaccination (if old enough to receive). All pets are required to be spayed or neutered before leaving our shelter so if you select a pet that has not had surgery we will schedule this procedure and take the pet in for surgery. You will have the option of picking up your pet at the veterinarian's office or at our shelter. We do not make any exceptions to this policy.
