While under contract with the city/county we were responsible for taking in approximately 4000 unwanted animals a year and sadly forced to euthanize 90% of those. The city/county are in the process of building their own animal control facility. This action now allows us to do things differently.
As the HS/AR we are very excited about our new role in the community. Here are just a few of the programs we have in place and some we are implementing: HS/AR will continue to investigate every complaint of animal abuse. Approximately 300 cases a year are reported and investigated. Pets are worth spaying(PAWS) an incentive program that pays individuals $40.00 reimbursement for having their pets altered. Spay neuter assistance program (SNAP) provides spay and neuter assistance for low-income families. Education programs. Adoption Option Program of Dekalb will be a way of placing pets in need of a home. We will place pets on our site (if they are altered) while the pet remains in their home until a qualified applicant(s) can be found. When a qualified applicant is found they will be matched with the pet owner. Then the applicant and pet owner will decided if the adoption takes place, once the pet owner has done a home visit and talked with the applicant. Developing a foster care home base. Project (HAPPY) housing animals protecting pets “Y” because it’s humane, this program provides new dog houses for pets that spend their lives on the end of a chain, as well as a run trolley to get them off of a chain for freedom of movement, a new food/water container thereby improving their quality of life somewhat. Since 2005, approximately 65 pets have benefited from the HAPPY project.
The HS/AR will also have time to devote to holding educational, adoption, and fund raising events throughout the ear for pets and their owners.
