Who We Are

Welcome to the Humane Society/Animal Resources of DeKalb, a non-profit organization located in Fort Payne, Alabama. As the Humane Society Society/Animal Resources, we are dedicated to helping change the lives of animals in our community through education and intervention. Our mission has always been to prevent pain and suffering of all animals throughout our community. The HS/AR has cared for approximately 75,000 animals since 1988 and investigated thousands of complaints of animal abuse & neglect during this time. After twenty years of contracting with our county government to house stray and unwanted animals, our county for the first time in its history, has built their own animal control facility. With the construction of their new shelter and taking over their responsibility of providing shelter as well as animal control services, this leaves the humane society free to devote 100% of our time, resources and efforts to abused, abandoned and neglected animals. We have implemented many programs over the years. The first; a spay/neuter assistance program (SNAP) for low-income families. Secondly; Pets Are Worth Spaying (PAWS), a spay/neuter program for cats which is a reimbursement program; upon providing proof of the pets being altered the owners are reimbursed a portion of the surgery fees. Thirdly; project HAPPY, Housing Animals Protecting Pets “Y” because it’s humane. This program provides dogs that are destined to spend their entire lives on the end of a chain with a dog house, a new food/water bowl and run cable for freedom of movement, thereby giving these dogs a little more quality of life. Fourthly; Our “Adoption Option Program” continues to be a success and continues to grow. This program allows pet owners to keep their pets in the home with them until the HS/AR can re-home them and allows the pet owners to be a part of the adoption process. Including where their pets are placed, which gives them a great sense of peace. Of course with our foster parents opening their hearts as well as their homes to many pets, this enables us to provide a safe refuge to many pets until they can get a second chance at a loving lifetime home. By providing these many resources and education we are able to intervene and prevent many animals from being neglected, abandoned or living hopeless and helpless lives. It is the hope of all involved with animal welfare that we envision a future where all animals are treated with respect, dignity, love, humane care and treatment. Adopting a friend

To adopt an animal from our facilty we require an adoption application,in which there is a 24 hour waiting period to find out your approval status. Our adoption fee is $75.00 and this covers spay/neuter surgery, first set of shots, bathing, ears cleaned, toe nails clipped and de-worming. We handle out of state adoptions case by case. We ask that the public be willing to come pickup the animal . We will not adopt outside a 100 mile radius.
