Puppy Adoption Extravaganzas Have Begun for the Summer!

Puppies like Jack, a Great Pyrenees mix, will be available for adoption at the Puppy Adoption Extravaganza events held throughout the summer at the shelter.

The Lee County Humane Society has launched its annual Puppy Adoption Extravaganzas for 2009! These on-the-spot adoption events are held the first and third Saturdays during the summer months every year. The first Puppy Extravaganza in July will be held July 11 because of the 4th of July holiday. Each event is held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of our facility.

At these events, adoption counselors will be on hand to help you adopt a puppy, and the adoption processing fee will be discounted from $80 to $60. If you are interested in adopting at one of our Puppy Extravaganzas, you will need to bring a copy of your current pet(s) vaccination records and a copy of your lease agreement stating that pets are allowed (if you rent your home).

Join LCHS for our next Puppy Adoption Extravaganza to find your best friend!

It's Summer - Must be Time to Wash-n-Wag!

The shelter has kicked off its annual Wash-N-Wag summer fundraisers for 2009! On the second and fourth Saturdays each month during the season, you can bring your dog(s) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to get a bath in the Washin' Wagon and enjoy some good clean fun! Small dogs cost $5 and large dogs are $10. All the proceeds will benefit the general operating fund of the Lee County Humane Society which sustains basic food, medical, and general welfare for the animals at the shelter.

The LCHS Best Friends Calendar is Back! Entries Begin June 1!

LCHS will begin accepting entries for the 2010 Best Friends Calendar on June 1, 2009. The Best Friends Calendar is a celebration of Lee County pets and helps raise money for the animals at the shelter. Each entry should be submitted with a $10.00 donation to the shelter. Registration forms are available online or or pick one up and submit your photo at the shelter. All entries must be received by June 19 at 5 p.m. at the shelter.

Voting for the calendar will begin June 22 at the shelter, online and at various community events and locations throughout the summer. Voting will end August 22 at the Lee County Humane Society's annual Woofstock celebration. Each vote costs $1.00, and the pet with the most votes will be featured on the cover of the calendar and the month of their choice. The 11 pets with the next highest amount of votes will be featured as a Pet of the Month. The 48 pets with the next highest amount of votes will be featured as a Pet of the Week on the calendar. Calendars will be sold at the shelter and around the area in the fall.

Foster Homes Urgently Needed!

If you are interested in helping the shelter, fostering is one way to make a huge impact. The Lee County Humane Society manages a growing foster care program that offers an exceptional experience for animal lovers who aren’t looking to adopt, but want to make a difference in the lives the animals at the shelter. Animals in need of support beyond the shelter environment benefit from being fostered.

Animals in need of foster care include:
  • Fostering dogs or puppies for 2-4 weeks
  • Puppies & Kittens who are too young for adoption
  • Sick & recovering animals that require special medical attention
  • Mistreated animals in need of socialization and care
  • Animals who do not fare well in the shelter setting

We always need more fosters for the many animals that visit the shelter each year. In order to foster, you must be able to provide a safe, stable, loving environment for the animals in your care. There are a few simple steps to the foster application, and once you complete an interview with the LCHS Foster Coordinator, you are ready to bring animals in your home. If you are interested in fostering, contact LCHS Foster Care Coorinator Joelle Ferrell at joelle@leecountyhumane.org.

A foster animal’s stay with you may be temporary, but the impact on their life and your own will be forever.

Take a Minute, Donate an Hour, Save a Life

To help combat the problem of pet overpopulation in Lee County, we are proud to announce plans to build an on-site spay/neuter facility at Lee County Humane Society! This facility will provide spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats prior to adoption from Lee County Humane Society. We want to achieve 100% spaying and neutering for all animals adopted from us. Our goal is to raise $200,000 to build the facility. We plan to do this with all private donations, and we have a head start with some generous donors giving a total of $130,000. So we still have to raise $70,000, and we hope to do it by the end of this year.

That's why we have kicked off a new campaign devoted to raising money for this landmark project: "Take a Minute, Donate an Hour, Save a Life." We are asking everyone to donate at least an hour of your pay to help this cause. For example, if you make $25,000 a year, we would ask you to donate at least $12.00. Of course, donors are free to give more! Donations can be made through the Paypal button on this Web page or on our main Web site www.leecountyhumane.org as well as by mail or visiting us at the shelter.

We are so excited about this opportunity to help make an impact on our community! But we can't do it without you. So please, take a minute, donate an hour, and save a life today.
