Our Mission Statement and Who We Are

"The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is dedicated to promoting respect for life through education and prevention of cruelty to animals and people."

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) strives to place our adoptable animals into responsible and loving homes through our Adoptions Program. We are also busy educating the public both in the schools and through our daily interactions with the public. The GBHS has an Education Program where we are able to go into the schools and help encourage the youth of our community to care for all living things. Our Volunteer program allows caring and dedicated volunteers to help care for the animals and find them loving homes. The GBHS also has a full-time Animal Cruelty Investigator who works with the local law enforcement agencies to help stop the cruelty to animals in our city and county. For more information about any of these services please visit our website at www.gbhs.org!

Low-cost Spay/Neuter Certificates (PAL certificates)

S.N.I.P. (Spay Neuter Incentive Program) is the result of two years of research of other successful programs in the United States, and, most importantly, incorporates suggestions from dozens of veterinarians in Jefferson County, for improvements in current low-cost spay/neuter programs. This program is funded by a grant from The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.

The S.N.I.P. Program is available to residents of Jefferson County who are able to demonstrate financial need. Those purchasing a S.N.I.P. certificate must show proof of residency by presenting a current utility bill or bank statement with their name and address, along with proof of financial need which could be a recent pay stub, previous year’s tax return, or proof of participation in a government (federal, state, or local) assistance program. These documents will be verified by an employee prior to the sale of the certificate.

The S.N.I.P. certificates will be sold at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s main shelter located off West Oxmoor Road and by the Friends of Cats and Dogs Foundation. The costs of the certificates will be as follows:

Certificate Type Cost Value
Canine Spay w/ Rabies Inoculation $45.00 (Actual Surgical Cost $135)
Canine Neuter w/ Rabies Inoculation $35.00 (Actual Surgical Cost $105)
Feline Spay w/ Rabies Inoculation $40.00 (Actual Surgical Cost $120)
Feline Neuter w/ Rabies Inoculation $25.00 (Actual Surgical Cost $75)

Interested parties can also call 205.942.1211 for information and directions.

Once the certificate is purchased, a list of participating veterinarians will be given to the pet owner. The owner will then be asked to make an appointment with one of the doctors listed. At the time of the surgery the pet will be provided with spay/neuter surgery, a rabies inoculation, and pain medication.

Vets that are interested in participating in the S.N.I.P. Program should contact Victoria Arrand, Director of Development for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, at 205.942.1211.

If you do not qualify for the S.N.I.P. certificate, contact the Alabama Animal Alliance at www.alabamaspayneuter.com to learn of additional spay and neuter options available throughout the state.
