Southern Shih Tzu & Toy Breed Rescue is currently rehabilitating and rehoming dogs that came from an Alabama Hoarding seizure- Over 145 dogs were taken from the home.

All dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots, heartworm tested, dewormed and treated for all medical issues (including dental work, heartworm treatment, etc....) prior to adoption.
We are currently seeking FUNDING (DONATIONS) for their medical needs. Rescue does not receive funding from local, state or federal government. We work on Donations alone! Please help us make a difference for these dogs.... they deserve a chance.

Who We Are
Southern Shih Tzu and Toy Breed Rescue (SSTR) is a 501(c)3, non profit organization located in central Alabama. SSTR is dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of Shih Tzu, as well as other toy breeds in the area. We work in conjunction with local shelters and other rescue groups to aid in placing needy furbabies in loving, caring FOREVER homes
SSTR takes in toy breeds regardless of age, health and/or temperament, when funding allows. Unfortunately, we are limited on funds and foster homes. Due to these limitations, we are forced to limit the number of babies we help.
All shih tzu are placed in foster care for evaluation and vet-work, which includes: spay/neuter, vaccinations and treatment of all other medical issues, based on vet recommendation. (heartworm treatment, dental work, hip surgery, eye surgery, etc...)

We honestly feel we can make a difference………. Rescue One until there are NONE!
SSTR also participates in local animal welfare events, promoting the education of animal welfare, prevention of abuse/neglect, spay/neuter programs and encourage people to adopt from shelters/rescue pets, reducing the number of animals killed in shelters.
We look forward to a world where our relationship with animals is guided by compassion and seek a truly humane society in which animals are respected and where the human-animal bond is strong.
ADOPTING A FRIEND
Completing the adoption application is a prerequisite to adopting a furbaby through Southern Shih Tzu Rescue. We DO out-of-state adoptions. New Parents are responsible for transportation (pick up).
- The person submitting the application, MUST be the person who is actually adopting the dog.
- The applicant must undergo reference checks and home visit.
- All current pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on shots.
- ALL pets must reside INSIDE your home.
- A fence yard is required on ALL adoptions!
This is NOT a first-come, first-served process. All of the furbabies that come into our care have already been shifted around or dumped at a shelter, we want to find the best forever home possible for them and the application is one way we do this.
All applicants are screened and approved on the needs of our furbabies. We place them in the "Best" home, based on THEIR needs and personality. Please note, you will be contacted if you meet the specific needs of the furbaby and are the best fit for their personality.
Our Adoption Fee is an "attempt" to recover vet fees, grooming and basic care cost. Our adoption fee is NON-negotiable. All furbabies are up to date on shots, spayed/neutered and all other medical issues treated, based on vet recommendation. (heartworm treatment, dental work, hip surgery, eye surgery, etc...)

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
** Become a Foster Volunteer **
Why not open your heart and home. Becoming a foster parent is the single most important way to help. Without foster homes, SSTR cannot rescue the many furbabies who need our help. At least twice a month, we are forced to turn down furbabies because there are no foster homes available. We currently place about 25-30 furbabies a year into new homes. This number could easily double with additional foster homes. We have actually had to turn many babies away this year.

** Donations **
Our organization operates on donations alone. Funds are directly applied to the needs and vet care of our furbabies. The more funds we have the more furbabies we can help.
Our babies normally need to be spayed/neutered, all shots, dewormed and heartworm tested. This is for the healthy and young. Older furbabies need additional vet care; bloodwork and dental work.
Our senior and special needs babies require long term foster and extensive vet care.................. so, every little bit can help.
