Pets of the Week flyer to print out

We’re asking for YOUR help saving animals’ lives! We’ve started a “Pets of the Week” flyer highlighting two animals desperately seeking homes. All you have to do is send your email address to Carol Wicks at cwicks@decatur-al.gov. Every week you will get an email with the latest Pets of the Week flyer. Just print out one or more copies and post them anywhere people will see it…with permission, please…at your workplace, at school, at church, at the gym, at the corner store, any place that will allow the flyer to be posted. When you get the new one, replace the old one with the latest. This is such as easy thing for you to do and it really saves lives every week.

The new animal shelter

The City of Decatur City Council awarded the bid in the end of May 2008 to build the new Animal Services shelter, and partial demolition of the old building has begun, to make way for the new construction and renovation.

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month

It’s that time again – kitten season, when too many kittens are born and end up at shelter doors. To promote adoptions of these wonderful pets, Decatur Animal Services joins American Humane Association in celebrating Adopt-A-Cat Month®, proudly sponsored by 9Lives® cat food. It’s the perfect time to visit your local shelter or animal rescue and save a life by adopting a cat!

Here’s just a few of the benefits you get from adopting a furry family member:

Who We Are

Decatur Animal Services is an animal control facility operated by the City of Decatur, Alabama at 1802 Central Parkway SW. Hours of adoptions are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday 10 am to 6:30 pm, and Saturday 8 am to noon. Receiving is from 8 am to the same closing times.

Nearly one half of the animals in the animal shelter are surrendered by families who can no longer care for them. Our mission is to promote the human animal bond. In addition to enforcement of local animal ordinances and animal cruelty investigation, our programs include adoptions, education and volunteerism. Our goals are to provide good public service and to promote humane treatment of animals and respect for life.

One of the most often asked questions is, "You won’t kill them, will you?" The answer is not a simple one. This shelter accepts all unwanted animals from Decatur citizens. We take the animals in, feed , clean, evaluate, bathe, walk, medicate, vaccinate, adopt, comfort, and when it becomes necessary, release the animals from a world in which no one is willing to be responsible for them.

When that decision is made, we do not “kill” animals, rather we humanely and painlessly euthanize them. We gladly look forward to the day when all animals live in a world where they are wanted, where someone is willing to take responsibility for every one of them. Until that day, we will continue to care for and make the difficult decisions about their lives with love and respect.

You can help to change the reality for animals in shelters by adopting them.
