Cullman County Animal Shelter
We are the only Animal Shelter in Cullman County. We take in animals from citizens as well as County Animal Control Officers and Municipal Animal Control Officers. We would love to see all the animals that come in find a good home. We have a very aggressive adoption program here and have one of the higher adoption rates in the state. We have several volunteers that carry our pets to Pet Depot most every Saturday from 11 am until 4 pm. We also utilize many foster homes in an effort to find more pets a home. We work very hard to maintain a clean and healthy environment for our animals. Recently, we were surprise inspected by the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners in which we scored a 100 and were told by them we were one of the cleanest shelters in Alabama. We are a county shelter and unlike private rescue groups, we cannot refuse to take animals in just because we are full or they are not a specific breed or size, although there are cases in which we cannot accept your owned animal. For example, if they are sick/injured, aggressive, pregnant, too young or too old, etc we would not accept them because our goal is to get animals adopted. We don't take in owner surrendered animals for the sole purpose of euthanasia. In these cases, you are encouraged to find them a new forever home or else carry them to your Vet and follow their recommendation. Private groups are fortunate in that they can pick and choose which animals to take in. This is why they can guarantee adoption of all their animals. We take in HUNDREDS of unwanted animals each month and we strive to find them homes. However, we still have to euthanize due to lack of space, foster homes and because we take in so many more than we are able to adopt out. We do maintain a higher adoption rate of all our adoptable pets and we are very proud of that. Also, if you know someone who is missing a dog please remind them to check here. We hold all stray dogs SEVEN days before they are put up for adoption so the owner has time to find their pet. After the state required 7 day stray hold the animals may then put up for adoption. If an animal is surrendered, it may be put up for adoption immediately. Contrary to what some may think, there is NO specific time we hold animals before euthanasia. Some are here many weeks or more depending on the room available here and some are not that fortunate if we are full. If you are looking for a pet to add to your family, we encourage you to come visit us. We always have plenty to choose from. If you adopt from a Shelter, you will leave knowing you have saved a life!

ADOPTING A FRIEND:
WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO SELECT THE BEST POSSIBLE PLACEMENT FOR ANY ANIMAL AND TO DENY A REQUEST TO ADOPT IF WE ARE NOT CONVINCED THE POTENTIAL ADOPTER CAN PROVIDE A SUITABLE HOME AND CAN ADEQUATELY CARE FOR THE ANIMAL. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 19 YEARS OLD AND PROVIDE AN APPROVED PICTURE ID TO SURRENDER OR ADOPT AN ANIMAL WITH US.
Our adoption fee is $90.00 for dogs and puppies and $65.00 for cats and kittens. You may come to the Shelter and pay by cash, check or debit/credit card or you may call in and do the adoption over the phone using the debit/credit card option. This price includes the general exam, (dogs/puppies) DA2PP & Bordetella vaccines, (cats/kittens) Fel-O-Vax IV + Calici vaccine, rabies, Strongid and the spay or neuter. Also the above price will also include a microchip for your new dog or cat. Your new pet must have a general exam done by a Vet upon adoption when they are transported for spay/neuter. If a major medical problem is found, we will gladly allow you to pick out another animal but we do not refund. When you adopt from us (if the K9 is not already altered) then your new pet will spend the night here then be transported the next business day to one of the designated Vets (must be Cullman County Vet on our list). There, the general exam, rabies vaccine microchip and spay/neuter will be done. You will be able to pick your animal up that afternoon or the following morning. There are no exceptions to this policy. We are very happy to adopt out of state and to other rescue organizations as well, provided you can arrange and provide the transportation of your new pet. Also other rescue organizations will have the same adoption fee as private adopters. We, along with our animals, look forward to seeing you soon.
We do have gift certificates available if you would like to pay the adoption fee for someone to adopt but allow them to come in and pick their pet out. Also, we have an adoption sponsorship program where you may donate any amount you'd like toward a future adoption. You will receive an adoption sponsor receipt upon donation and all donations made to us are tax deductible. If you can't have or adopt a pet for yourself but would like to help in getting the animals adopted, this a perfect alternative for you. If you want to do so, when donating please let us know that you'd like that money to be applied toward a Sponsored Adoption.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
FOSTER HOME: We need foster homes for cats and dogs. This means you would take the animals into your home and then have them available for adoption on Saturdays at offsite. Also you may be asked to meet a potential adopter at other times. This is a very rewarding way to help the unwanted animals in Cullman County on a continual basis. If you would be interested in fostering please come by and pick up a foster application. You must reside in Cullman County to foster for us and follow all rules of our program.
We welcome volunteer who want to help in many different areas. Some of those areas would be dog walking, assisting with pet photos, grooming needs of the animals, assisting with Offsite adoptions, general housekeeping in the Shelter maintaining the cages/kennels, etc. If you are interested in volunteering, please come by and get an application.
Some want to help but really are in no position to foster or give their time. If this is you, we welcome your donations. It is because of donations that we are able to buy vaccines, meds, microchips and keep our Adoptoin Sponsor Program going. Your donation is tax deductible and VERY much appreciated!
WORD OF MOUTH: Anytime you can reccomend adoption of Shelter pets to your friends and family, you are potentially helping to save yet another life. Please encourage adoption to everyone you know.
INTAKE OF ANIMALS:
If you reside inside Cullman County and you need to surrender your animal to us, you will need to do so Monday thru Friday 9-11 am and 11:30 -3:30 pm. Please leave the animal in you vehicle while you come inside to register with us. We cannot guarantee adoption of any animal and euthanasia is a possibility and sometimes it is immediate if we are full. If you are bringing a stray in, please observe the same rules as above. It is recommended that you call before you come to make arrangements for the animal you are bringing. PLEASE NOTE: ONCE YOU HAVE GIVEN YOUR SIGNATURE FOR SURRENDER OF AN ANIMAL TO THE SHELTER, NO FURTHER INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED TO YOU ABOUT THE ANIMAL(S). NOT ALL ANIMALS SURRENDERED CAN BE PLACED FOR ADOPTION. TO ENSURE THE EMOTIONAL CONSIDERATION OF CCAS STAFF AND PET OWNERS, COMPLETION OF INTAKE REGISTRATION MEANS THAT NO ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO YOU CONCERNING DISPOSITION OF THE ANIMAL(S) YOU BROUGHT IN. IF YOU CALL TO SEE IF THE ANIMAL IS STILL HERE, YOU WILL ONLY BE TOLD YES OR NO. IF THE ANSWER IS NO, WE WILL NOT DISCLOSE TO YOU IF THE ANIMAL WAS ADOPTED OR NOT.
