Kittens and puppies are being dumped and the shelters are being flooded with unwanted, discarded animals. Did you know that the average euthanazia rate for most Alabama shelters is around 85%? It's overwhelming. Dogs and cats aren't something that you discard when they grow up or you have children or grow tired of them. They are living, breathing, loving animals to which you to stay committed through the good times and the bad. They need you to make them part of your family and keep them safe and healthy. They can't do it by themselves. There's no excuse for all these dogs being put in shelters. And there certainly is no excuse for dumping kittens and puppies. Spay and neuter your animals. Keep them up to date on their shots and keep them on monthly heartworm treatment. Commit to them.

Adopting a friend

The adoption fee of $125 and $85 for dogs and cats, respectively, covers their up-to-date shots, deworming, vetting, and spay/neutering. You can link from our website at mittensandmutts.com to find a pre-adoption application.

For information on inexpensive spay/neuter certificates, visit Friends of Cats and Dogs at www.fcdf.org or Alabama Animal Adoption Society at www.animaladoption.org

Our Featured Pet...

Drexel

Drexel is approximately 4 yrs old. We think he has been in a home with children at one time because he gets excited and happy when he sees children. He is a low maintenance dog who enjoys just being around you.

We have a new website! Please visit us at mittensandmutts.com to see what's new at MMRA. You’ll find heartwarming stories of successful adoptions and ways to help the animals through sponsorship, membership, and donations.

Who We Are

We are a community-based group that provides secure environments for stray, discarded, or abused animals until they are adopted to permanent, loving homes. We are not a shelter, but foster out of our homes. Occasionally we help local shelters by taking animals that would otherwise be euthanized

We are all volunteers and our expenses are covered by the donations, adoption fees, or our own pockets. We do not make a profit from any adoption fees or donations. All money is put towards vet bills or the care for other animals. MMRA provides general health check-ups, immunizations, de-worming, heartworm prevention, and spay/neutering for all adoptable animals. When a puppy or kitten is too young for spay/neutering, a mandatory pre-paid certificate becomes part of the adoption fee.

Our mission is to work with other organizations to protect animals from neglect or abuse. Most often this neglect is seen as unvetted and/or unsupervised animals that roam freely and reproduce at alarming rates.
"If we all work together, doing what little we can, we can educate the public and make a huge difference.".

The Black Pearls of the Dog World
Did You Know: The general public is not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound because black dogs, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs. If you are thinking about adopting a dog please don't overlook black dogs because they are just as loving & wonderful as lighter colored dogs! ~Martin County Animal Shelter, Fairmont,MN
