Who We Are

The Humane Society of Etowah County was established in 1973 as a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty of animals, the relief of suffering among animals, and the extension of humane education as set forth in the by laws of the Society.

The old shelter facility was in the old City of Gadsden dog pound, which was enlarged over the years from the original 10 dog runs to 40 runs, including compartments that housed puppies, small dogs, cats and kittens.

Funding from municipal service agreements provide a portion of operating expenses to house animals for animal control. Contributions play a major role in the Society's operations and fund the SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) effort in its entirety.

Humane Society personnel are on pager call 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide access to the animal shelter for Animal Control Officers.

The Humane Society is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Potential adopters must complete an adoption application form which aids shelter staff in determining if a home would be a suitable home. We strive for quality homes, not quantity of homes.

Adopting a friend

Please take a few moments to read the following explanation of our adoption policies and the steps that make up the process. You may be surprised to find that adopting an animal is a more involved process than you expected, or that it means you can't have immediate access to an animal in which you are interested.

Therefore, it's important to understand two things:

  1. ) The process is the same for everyone, and
  2. ) It's not our intention to frustrate you. Rather, everything we do is for the best interest of the animals in our care, and is aimed at giving them the best possible chance of finding a permanent home.

Here are the steps you'll go through in the adoption process:

  • Before you can visit with any animal you've seen in our kennel, we will ask you to complete some paperwork. This paperwork should be completed first in order to minimize stress for you and the animals. Our process includes asking questions, requesting to see proof of identity, veterinary references, particularly when you have other animals at home. This is to protect the health of our animals and the pets you already have.
  • Once all the paperwork has been completed and approved, you may handle and visit the animal in which you are interested. You will have a counseling session with a member of our staff. You can ask your counselor any questions about spaying and neutering, house training, obedience training, scratching (in cats), care, how to deal with fleas and ticks, and other pet questions.
  • You will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee which provides spay/ neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, first vaccinations,de-worming,heartworm testing in dogs, FeLv, FIV tesing in cats, and microchipping that comes with 30-day pet insurance.

Please note: As a general rule, we cannot hold animals for anyone. The most qualified applicant will get the pet. In the case of multiple applications for the same animal, HSEC personnel reserves the right to select the most qualified applicant.

Let us repeat: We don't ever intend to cause frustration or appear evasive. We want you to understand that it is upsetting for all concerned, especially the animals, when adoptions don't work out. One bad adoption experience can prevent someone from ever returning to an animal shelter. Please try to bear with us and be patient.
