Our adoption application is available on-line and will be sent to you, routinely, with our answer to your initial inquiry. We make every effort to prequalify applicants so the waiting period between rescue and placement is shortened. Anyone wishing to adopt should complete the application so the approval process is initiated. The adoption fee is $125 for dogs and $85 for cats. All animals will be spayed/neutered before adoption.

. . . .Please feel free to e-mail us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Who We Are

WAAR is a non-profit tax-exempt, animal rescue and re-homing organization dedicated to the rescue of animals who have been abused, abandoned, lost, starving, those living in unbearable conditions and those facing certain euthanasia in the Metro Animal Shelter. We are sorry but we cannot take animals from the public . . what funds we have must be spent on the many homeless animals rescued from our local shelter. We receive no local, state or federal funding. Donations from our many friends and our own efforts, thru fundraisers, are our only source of income. Medical expenses for the animals we rescue represent 100% of every donated dollar.

THE HISTORY OF WAAR

WAAR was started in the early 90's because of a specific need. That being the re-homing of animals that were left by the students at the University of Alabama when they returned home in the spring. Every spring around campus, we would find 10's of dogs and cats abandoned by their student owners. These animals would wander around the complexes or sit by the door of the apartment that was once their home waiting for someone to return . . . of course they never did. It was and is heartbreaking to see a puppy sitting by an apartment door confused and hungry but ever faithful.

The animals were vigilant, often waiting until they became weak from starvation and died or they were picked up by animal control. One would think that a kind-hearted neighbor would take the animal in . . . and sometimes they did. At that time we, as individual animal lovers, took them into our own home, got them medical attention and found them loving new, permanent home.

Adopting a friend

As you read this, a small puppy sits in a cage, frightened, bewildered . . . waiting to die.

If the puppy is lucky, some time in the next few days, the door to his little cage will open and a tall, skinny young woman with a soft voice will bend down to talk to him, pat him on the head and tell him everything is going to be all right. She will be the president of West alabama Animal Rescue and will be there to take the puppy to safety, to medical care, to a loving and restful foster home and, eventually, adoption in to a permanent home of his very own.

You might ask, "what happens to the puppy if this young woman never comes?" The nightmare for the little fellow continues and soon the door to his cage will open for the wrong reason . . . .

Across this great country, millions of innocent puppies and kittens die like this every day. The shelters are crowded, loud and smelly . . . the puppies and kittens are scared and alone. Many have been abandoned, lost or even given away by a family who no longer cares. Don't be fooled when someone thinks their puppy will find a good home by being taken to the local shelter. Being adopted from a shelter is more luck than anything else . . . kinda like winning the Florida Lottery. Only about 30 percent of the animals taken to our local shelter make it out alive. Some were lost and are reclaimed by their owners, a few "hit the Lottery" and find adoptive homes but . . . 70 percent . . . well, now you know what happens to the others.

That is simply not good enough.

Somewhere in a local shelter, there is a puppy, kitten, dog or cat, probably frightened, certainly confused - unaware that when the door to his tiny cage is next opened . . . his time may have run out.

Thank you for your compassion and support of all Petfinder Adoptable Pets . . . a loving home like your's truly is a lifesaver.
