Who We Are and What We Do

Since 1979 the Baldwin County Humane Society has provided services to help and protect abused, abandoned and neglected dogs and cats in Baldwin County. The BCHS is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization with only three paid employees. We receive no government or United Way funding. With our VERY limited resources, we are not a shelter and cannot provide animal control services. We do, however, Rescue, Rehabilitate and Re-home thousands of dogs and cats each year. We rely on the financial support of caring and generous people like YOU!

Adopting a friend

Our goal is matching great pets with ideal adopters. Every day, people ask us for help - they have a pet they can no longer care for; they've found an abandoned pet or they are trying to find a home for an otherwise homeless pet. We help these folks through our "Family to Family Program" We first ask that they continue caring for the pet in their home until we can find an appropriate placement, and NOT ABANDON THE PET TO A SHELTER!!! Placing a pet in a new home is a great responsibility and we want to get it right! First, we make a detailed profile of the pet. Then we match that pet with potenial adopters who have been pre-screened. We complete a detailed profile on each person seeking a pet through us. Because of our rigourous screening efforts, we have a high rate of successful adoptions. This results in the reduction of the numbers of pets that are needlessly destroyed at shelters or abandoned to fend for themselves and face certain death. If you are interested in one of our pets - please give us a call and talk to one of our Volunteer Adoption Counselors - they will fill out a profile card on you and help you find the perfect pet! Adopters must agree to the following: Adopters must have the pet examined by a Vet within 7 days of the adoption. Alabama Law requires the adopter to have the pet spayed or neutered (if not already done) and agree that the pet will never be allowed to breed. (The Adoption fee covers a free spay or neuter for the pet if needed). They must also agree to provide the pet with a good home, including, but not limited to, adequate food, constant availablity to water and shelter, exercise and all necessary veterinary care. Adoption fees for BCHS animals are $75.00 for dogs and $50.00 for cats. For more information, call or visit us online at www.baldwinhumane.org.

RESCUE PET ADOPTIONS

These monthly events are staffed by volunteers who pick up pets from shelters, vet clinics and foster homes and take them to high-profile locations such as festivals and pet stores. Through our "Family to Family" program, people who call and list a pet for adoption with us may also be invited to bring the pet to an adoption event. All adopters at our pet adoption events sign a contract agreeing to spay or neuter their new pet, and must pay the required adoption fee. Call us at 1-800-547-6518, for details about current adoption events.

KITTEN KABOODLES

Our Kitten Kaboodles Program has resulted in the successful placement of hundreds of cats and kittens in loving new homes! Thanks to the hard work and cooperation of participating pet stores, vet clinics, and VOLUNTEERS, felines are placed in retail locations throughout the county for adoption. Contact us for current Kitten Kaboodles locations.

SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAMS

Spaying and neutering pets is the single most crucial first step in controlling pet over-population and eliminating euthanasia as a means of pet population control. The BCHS sponsors and subsidizes spay/neuter programs for Baldwin County residents who adopt from shelters, Baldwin County pet owners on fixed incomes and those that meet certain low-income guidelines.
