Dear friends, your participation at this year’s fundraiser is so important. Our financial resources are very low, our foster care program is currently “full” with EIGHT horses in our care, and there are more horses and horse owners out there who need our help. Remember, we are an all-volunteer network and we are fully funded by community donations. Without your help, we couldn't continue to do all the wonderful things we've worked so hard to accomplish over the years!

We have exciting plans for the 2007 auction and we already have some great donated items! You’ll get a kick out seeing old friends, making new friends, and getting some fabulous deals to start off the coming season.  This will be a terrific event for the whole family.

THE  MAIN  DOOR  PRIZE  IS  A  TON  OF  HAY WORTH MORE THAN $450!

Every person who comes to the auction gets one FREE door prize ticket for the door prize drawings.  Other tickets will be available for sale at the auction.  There are also many other terrific door prizes donated by local businesses. (The winner of the ton of hay worth more than $450 must be present at the time of the drawing, and will be responsible for picking the hay up in Anchorage.) Mark your calendars now; this is truly a fun family event with tons of great deals for an excellent cause!

Suggested Auction Items to Donate: Used & new horse tack & equipment, farm & garden items, arts & crafts, services & gift cards from your business, etc.!   Donated items should be clean, in reasonable repair/condition, and generally presentable for sale.  Minimum bids may be applied as requested.

Thank you all for your continued support – we look forward to seeing you in May!

If you or your business would like to donate something or if you would like more information on this year's fundraiser, please call, toll-free from within Alaska, 1-888-LUV-HORSE (1.888.588.4677) or e-mail aer@alaskaequinerescue.com.

Who We Are

Alaska Equine Rescue is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help starving, neglected and abused hooved animals in Alaska, especially horses. We try to prevent future instances of starvation and neglect through a network of education and teamwork.

Alaska Equine Rescue (AER) is an IRS Recognized 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1990. Our IRS taxpayer identification number is 92-0135114 and our fiscal year is from October 1 through September 30. AER is not membership based and we have no paid staff. Volunteers receive no money other than an occasional reimbursement for expenses they have paid out of their own pockets.

The requirement to file taxes is dictated by the amount of contributions received. For many years AER did not have to file tax returns because its contributions did not exceed $25,000 annually. In 1999-2000, however, the generosity of the public in response to a large rescue involving more than 120 animals on the Kenai Peninsula pushed us over that line. AER has no taxable income.

AER's Board of Directors currently consists of 6 members. We also have 2 Special Advisors
.

Sally Clampitt, President
Sally has been involved with AER since 1991 in a number of different capacities and currently serves as AER's President. She coordinates the activities of the organization including the newsletter (when time permits), monthly updates in local publicatins, and supports the board in coordinating resuces; budgeting and financial issues. She completed the American Humane Association's 2-day Horse Abuse Investigation Seminar in 1996.
She and her husband, Ralph, have been horse owners for nearly 30 years. They have lived in Anchorage since coming to Alaska in 1985. Sally works full time as an administrative manager for an Anchorage corporation.
Dave Wachsmuth, Vice President
Dave has been with AER since 1992; first as a Coordinator and currently as a board member and Vice President. He has been instrumental in overseeing local rescue and fostering operations, as well as a lot of field work with fellow board member, Robert Aiken. Dave and his wife, Jan, have successfully coordinated AER's biggest single fundraiser, the annual auction and potluck fundraiser, since the mid 90s.
Dave also represents the local horse community in People for the Emergency Preparedness of Animals (PEPPA), an organization whose mission is to ensure that pets and livestock are taken care of during emergencies such as earthquakes and fires. From 1990 to 1999 he also served as Vice President and then President of Southcentral Horsemen's Association, a group of volunteers who oversee the operation of a 40-acre equestrian park in Chugiak.
Dave completed the American Humane Association's 2-day Horse Abuse Investigation Seminar in 1996. He has served on the Municipality of Anchorage Zoning Board of Appeals and the Eagle River Valley Community Council. A former owner in a Downtown Anchorage carriage company, he now owns “Mike", a huge Belgian draft who pulls a carriage recreationally from time to time. Dave and Jan have lived in Eagle River for 30 years and Dave works full time for the Department of Defense, Elmendorf Air Force Base, as a heavy equipment operator.
Robert Aiken, Secretary
Bob and wife Paula have been involved with AER as a foster home since 1992 nurturing several emaciated horses back to good health. In May, 2001, Bob accepted a seat on the board with Paula as alternate. Bob is instrumental in working with fellow board member, Dave Wachsmuth, to handle a great deal of field work and hands-on rescue follow up.
Bob grew up on a farm in Canada, using horses instead of tractors. He has been an Alaska resident since 1974 and took up horse ownership again in 1985. Bob and Paula currently own 4 horses (including one very handsome paint foal) used for pleasure trail riding. Although he is now retired, Bob worked for 23 years as a military aviation maintenance supervisor and instructor, and then went on to a second 17-year career with the State of Alaska working with rural communities teaching and assisting with land management and local governance issues.
Cindy Stark, Treasurer
Cindy has been a special friend of AER's for many years. She joined our board in early 2004, and is also our Treasurer. In that capacity, she has been instrumental in getting our accounts payable out promptly, and designing and mailing out some long overdue and much needed thank you notes. Cindy was raised on a Thoroughbred farm, and has extensive experience in working with horses. She owns and trains her own quarterhorse mare, as well as helping other local riders in the Chugiak area. Cindy also owns and runs her own sewing and monogramming business, and brings to our group a great artistic touch, and commitment to helping horses in Alaska.

Adopting a friend - Adoption Guidelines

Alaska Equine Rescue reserves the right to adopt out horses at its own discretion based on its evaluation of what is in the best interests of the horse. Adoption is not a bid process or a first-come, first-served process. Alaska Equine Rescue reserves the right to decline an adoption application for any reason, at its own discretion.

We have some basic, minimum requirements for our adoption homes. (Scroll to the bottom of this section to download a copy.)

Shelter - Safe and sturdy shelter, adequate in size for the number of horses to be maintained. The shelter doesn't need to be an enclosed barn, but it should be sturdy, capable of withstanding snowloads and wind (no tarps or lightweight pole barns), and should have adequate footing (that doesn't turn into a small pond when it rains).

Fencing - Safe and sturdy fencing must be in place. Staking out at any time is discouraged and it is not allowed as a permanent form of containment. Fencing may include most commercial materials, including electric fencing. Barbed wire is not permitted.

Adequate Turnout Space - Safe and adequate space for the horse to go outside and self-exercise must be available. The horse may not be stalled all the time.

Water - fresh, clean, potable, unfrozen water must be available to the horse at all times, as necessary to keep the animal healthy and in good flesh.

Feed and Hay - Clean, wholesome, nutritious hay, of a type as recommended at the time of adoption, must be provided to the horse, in a quantity sufficient to keep the animal healthy and in good flesh. Also, if recommended at the time of adoption, clean, wholesome and appropriate portions of a concentrate or grain must be provided to the horse, in keeping with the age, breed, size, condition, and work load of the animal and as necessary to keep the animal healthy and in good flesh. Later changes in the feeding program may be made as appropriate, but may not compromise the health and welfare of the horse.

Financial Responsibility - Adoption homes must be able to afford the cost of responsible and humane horse care. In addition to the aforementioned items, typical responsibilities include veterinary care, shoeing and trimming, supplies, and equipment.

A Good Match - The temperament, athletic ability or limitations, age, size, nutritional requirements, veterinary and farrier requirements, and other characteristics of the horse must be a good match for the adoption family.

Humane Care Contract - Adoption home must be willing to sign and abide by the terms of our humane care contract, which entitles AER to monitor the well-being of the horse and maintain access rights at all times to do so.

Download a copy of these guidelines using the links below or contact us and we'll send you a copy and answer all your questions.

Adoption/Humane Care Contract - Humane care contracts are required on all AER horses. Each contract is tailored to the individual needs of the horse. If you are interested in adopting one of our horses, download the application below or give us a call and we'll send you an application and answer all your questions. We will then follow-up with a personal visit and interview. AER reserves the right to adopt all horses at our own discretion, not based on money, but on our best effort to find the most appropriate home for each horse.
