Our Featured Pet...

ADDO is this month's featured pet! Visit his listing on our "adoptable pets" page! He's a great, handsome dog with lots of energy that wants to belong! He walks well on a leash and is very attentive when he's away from the distraction of all the other dogs.

News

The Long Haul Kennel is a small kennel operated solely by volunteers. We are dedicated to providing loving, stable homes to working and non-working Alaskan Huskies. WE WILL CONSIDER OUT OF STATE ADOPTIONS! There are not enough homes in Alaska for huskies. It's a bit more involved, but if you would like to provide a good home for any of our dogs, we're willing to work with you!

We're always in need of donaitons and volunteers. We'd love to have some help during the mushing season. If you'd like to learn more about dog mushing and living with sled dogs as pets, we'd love to talk! Limited lodging is also available for out-of-state visitors.

Who We Are

At the Long Haul Kennel we provide a stable and loving home for many of interior Alaska's unwanted sled dogs. Some of these dogs were surrendered because they were too slow for a competetive racing team or their owner lost interest in recreatinal mushing.

The primary issues facing most of these dogs is simply a lack of experience as a companion animal. Many of them fill that role naturally and eagerly, while others require more patience and socialization.

Once a dog has become comfortable with life as a companion animal, learned the appropriate basic doggie manners and demonstrates the ability to adapt to new environments and experiences in a positive manner, he or she is placed on the "adoptable pets" list. We do have some residents that, due to their fears or other issues, will likely never be considered adoptable to other homes. These animals are guaranteed to spend their lives here at our rural facility in a positive, safe, and caring environment. They welcome visits and attention. Whether you are looking for a husky in particular, or are not quite sure what kind of dog or pet you want, we'd love to help you figure it out! Feel free to use us as an adoption counselor to help you find the pet that's right for you, whether it's at our shelter or another.

Adopting a friend

Since the term "Alaskan Husky" describes a type of dog and not a specific breed, we have dogs of virtually all different sizes, energy levels, and temperaments. We do not work with agressive animals. We do not accept agressive animals into our shelter or recommend them for adoption.

As a whole, Alaskan Huskies make excellent companions for active individuals or families and typically do great in a multi-dog household. There are always exceptions to every rule, though. Therefore, when you contact us to inquire about a dog we have listed, we'll have a lot of quesitons for you. The questions we ask will help us to match you with the pet that's best suited to your situation, so please be honest! Most dogs spend enough time at our shelter for us to make a good character assessment. Alaskan Huskies aren't for everyone, though. If you're not sure if one of these dogs is right for you, we'd be happy to provide you with more information so you can make an informed decision.

Until the website link is listed on this page, please feel free to e-mail us so we can send you a link to our website that has the specific adoption information.

All animals are spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations before going to their new home.
